Why aren't my chutes opening?

Recommended Posts

So I've got this baby aerobraking on Kerbin.

Spoiler

GOeQFJS.png

It has got two chute modules with 8 drogue and 8 regular chutes on each. Drogue chutes are set to deploy as early as possible.
The problem is that it crashes on Kerbin surface with all chutes staged (with blue-on-red icons on staging panel) but not deployed. None of them is even destroyed until crash - they simply don't work.

What am I doing wrong?

In VAB, set the deploy altitude for drogue parachute higher, preferrably maximum value, and set the blue parachute altitude around half of that. Also, set the atmospheric pressure for drogue chutes at low, while the blue chute at half

Use drogue first, right click on drogue chute on reentry and once it says safe, deploy it. Now right click on blue parachute once the drogue is deployed and wait for safe indicator again for deployment. Drogue safe deployment speed is around 800 m/s while blue chute is around 400 m/s

Blue on red indicator means you are too fast. Try shallower reentry angle to avoid going down too fast and give your capsule enough time to slow it down to safe deployment speed

looks like it was a bad idea to aerobrake with asteroid, RIP jeb

It is doable, theoretically. The easiest way is to mine the asteroid first. After you take all the ore out, an asteroid slows down really fast.

It's also doable with an intact asteroid, but you need a lot more aerodynamics on your craft than you have. Wings & fins will slow even a very massive craft.
