Circumnavigate Kerbin with a rover

Now this is something that I have wanted to do for years.

This challenge will needs lots of preperation though.

First thing I need is the best route around Kerbin.

Second thing is finding a way to cross some seas since there is no way to do this without crossing some waters.

Modded bridges or a ferry are the best options.

I have some questions though: Has this been done before ?

If so, what was the route ?

* just want to say I'm taking this seriously, I've driven half the planet already:

Oh, I would love to see that to be a thing again. It used to be the Elcano challenge but it's been silent for 2 years (original and continued).

Take a look if you need some inspiration,  there are some very interesting designs in there.

Very interesting, but I'm not happy with rule #3:

3. The same vehicle that crosses the land, must also cross water. No ferrying your vehicle on a boat.

I don't want to do the trip with an amphibious vehicle . . .

I'll use a ferry or a plane, maybe a bridge to get across.

Thanks, I have some reading to do I see. ^_^

My guess is the trip will take three months of daily driving, no joke.

I estimate 40-50+ hours on wheels alone. I'm not that much of a masochist, I'd make MechJeb drive it for me.

I just did some math, and I the Wheesley at an average 5.6% thrust beats out the Juno at an average 33% thrust for fuel usage over 35 hours. The Wheesley could do that on 4.03 Mk1 tanks, vs the Juno at 6.3 tanks.

@FleshJeb I like it when people do their math in this game.

Preperation is wat I love about doing these kind of challenges.

As for MechJeb doing all the driving, why would you do that ?

For me the real challenge is to actualy drive it myself, all the way. &)

And I love doing it hard style, I'm still proud of my Pole2Pole mission where I drove a crappy buggy half way around the planet.

Btw, crossing the bridge takes 9 minutes 45 second seconds driving 35 m/s (about 125 kph)

Dude, you gotta release the files for the bridges when you finish... I'm sure that a lot of people would enjoy having them.

You think ? I gladly share.

Okay, ready when you are.

Got my crew. Got my MEGA Truck.

Cool !

So you are willing to join me on this horrible looooooooong mission ?

Awesome, I'm learning more about KK and my bridge building skills are improving.

Thanks for motivating me, I wasn't sure I would actually going to do this. ^_^

Building bridge #2 as we speak:

Because of the curve of Kerbin this bridge actually is going up, so I have to pitch it on the way.

That was a nice surprise, I love this game.

Is the bridge one monolithic construction, or a bunch of individual pieces?

Individual parts placed together.

I think I can snap pieces together, but I don't now how.

I might have solved the problem, I deleted all the parts that where out of range and started a new group connecting new parts.

I'm about to test it now.

I placed a flag at the beginning of the bridge to measure it's length and drove back succesfully.

Some "speedbumps" are on the bridge, so blind full speed crossing will get you killed.

I kinda like that risk, it ads some realistic danger to it.

No easy crossings here.

A better view to explain the problem I've had, the bridge group range only goes halfway.

Everything I've buid after that was later not visible.

I solved it by creating another group on the other side of the bridge, placed a segment and connected it to the first bridge part.

In this picture you can see where the group ends:

So what I'm saying is that I had to build 2 bridges meeting in the middle.

I guess that is also how they do it in real life, so it was a good experience for me. ^_^

I hope this explains some things.
