And did you clean up the two remaining wheels?  Too bad you couldn't haul back in one of the trucks.

I recovered the wheels, but come to think about it, I might could have picked them up and place them in the KIS container on the service truck.

As for the vehicle, you've been driving.  Is there something fundamentally wrong with the rover that makes it tip over more often?  Or is it more driving too fast for the ground?

The buggy is fine, what happened was Jeb got out of the buggy trying to push it back on it's wheels.

Then he just dove under and tumbled down the mountain and exploded. :o

I'd suggest going with a winch on each face and the top and figuring out those KAS stakes.

Yeah, that does work, you can stick a harpoon in the ground and attach a winch to it.

Allthough Jeb died, we've learned a lot during this experience.

I'm also annoyed that I can bring only one flag (I need a command pod for more flags)

So I might even consider getting out the old Pole2pole buggy.

Once again we asked R&D to come up with a new design.

We are going for a command pod rover so we can carry KIS stuff and more flags to set up the route.

We got Jeb's logo on it as a tribute.

RIP Jeb. -_-

So we are in almost 6 days now and have 74 days left, we can do this . . .

Restart, Bill in the Bugger buggy:

NeO7CIZ.png

Now that we have a command pod we can take more flags to mark our route and take KIS tools with us.

It's a fast buggy, a bit of a drifter, but fast:

j6iitMu.png

Now it gets interesting, we've crashed loosing our butt.

bzpIgYK.png

We landed on the wheels and could continue.

BUT !

My buggy's wheels are acting funny and the buggy keeps pulling to the right.

So I stopped and tried the next thing:

ceqbC06.png

I removed a wheel using my KIS tool and placed it back.

I thought I'd never could get the wheel mirrored in the right place, but after placing it it did !

Got back in the buggy and guess what ?

It fixed our problem, the buggy drives straight again, unbelievable !

This made me very happy and gave me confidence.

Kerbin, here we come !

Questions:

-What's the mass of the buggy?
-Where is the centre of mass in relation to the Wheels / Ground?

Here you go:

DAY 6

I'm racing like crazy out here and loving it !

It's drifting like crazy, but that only helps me prevent from tipping over.

Not bad for a crappy buggy. ^_^

Just look at the scenery, this is awesome.

Good for you, now drive it all around Kerbin.

What ? No ?

I dare you.

What inspires me:

When I'm driving around Kerbin I like to watch video's on my laptop to pep me up.

This is what I like to watch when driving.

I use my gaming laptop as my workstation. :D

I play on an external KVM and put videos up on the laptop screen. :)

Yes he is, and he is not coming back, my settings won't allow it.

I also can't quicksave, this is all real (Kerbal) time, real life. . . ^_^

I use mods like Editor Extensions to get those critical alignments right.

However, that's helpful for aligning like say between the front pair of wheels and the rear pair.  The stock part mirror in the SPH should have been sufficient to get the front pair aligned....  Or does it ?!?

The Centre of Mass is fine, and it's not too high, so that's good. Your craft might be a bit too light for the wheels. I've found that if a craft is too light the springs and shock absorbers just make things bounce around a lot. Reducing spring/shock settings may help, but a quick check is to add more mass at the COM point or as close as possible. If the buggy handles better and doesn't drift as much, then it's a mass issue. The current MEGA Truck sits at 19 tonnes (20 tonnes at the start of the challenge) but distributed somewhat evenly over 10 wheels, and even then I had to back off the individual springs by a small amount. Shock absorbers can't be too stiff either. Stiff is good for pavement, but softer lets the wheels track the ground better when going off road. You still need some dampening, but not as much as one thinks.

Now, my trip is going well. I'm starting the southward swing towards the last bridge (#7 I think) but I'm still only 2/3 thru day 2. Real life has been keeping me busy, but other than that it's going rather well.

99% of the time it does. Sometimes I have to align things manually, but generally if the parts that the wheels are intended to mount to are properly aligned then the wheels will as well. Non-square frames will need some manual adjusting which can be tricky to do even with the fine rotational editor in the SPH.

Remember when jalopies had fins and spoilers?

Improved handling and does 100+ m/s, straight & level.

Toll bridges backed up?  Take the express lane...

(Wernher couldn't resist this one...  :) (This is all reverse engineered, btw))

That back end gets a lot of damage.  Perhaps the rear wheels should have been a touch farther back?

Yeah, but that doesn't look cool enough so no.

Edit: I think the buggy is to close to the ground making the rear parts slam into the ground.

Setting the flag for checkpoint 2 ( I plan to place a flag every 50 kms )

I have no screenshot of Bill placing the flag, I forgot...

Here you can see the terrain I'm driving on :

The marker for Rolas and Edberry just popped in, 99.0 kms to go, it's more really, I can't drive there in a straight line.

Have you even taken the more direct from KSC to the west coast, about WNW?  Or is the ground just too rough at too many places?

You mean this route ? :

xNlnQaj.png

I remember the first part from doing the Kerbal Dakar in 2017, you have to cross through the mountain in the first part which is pretty tricky, but it can be done.

Checkpoint 3

This time we didn't forget to take a screenshot of Bill having his moment....

We do a little test on our retractable solar panels (I completely forgot I had those...).
