So I ran KSP on my new laptop...

HOW CAN THIS BE POSSIBLE? :D

Well even heavily modded KSP runs at acceptable framerates (assuming I don't go overboard with too many parts) even on my 9 year old hardware.  So no surprise vanilla runs well on a new laptop.

Because KSP is CPU-bottlenecked due to all the realtime physics abstractions and relatively simple graphical demands, as opposed to most other games (at least ones people often complain won't run on their laptops) which are GPU-bottlenecked. Grand Theft Auto 5 does less complex physics calculations on the fly than KSP, but you won't get that running on a school laptop.

I was pleasantly surprised how well it ran on my i5 dell inspiron.  Started to get a bit slow launching stuff big enough for interplanetary flights but it handled a surprisingly high number of parts.  As above relatively modest graphics requirements mean it's pretty well suited for laptops.

Honestly I've never seen a game better optomized. The only game that seems to come close to running smoothly universally on seemingly any computer is Minecraft, but with all the physics in the game you would think KSP would chop harder than it does.

KSP runs better than Minecraft for me, even with like 100 mods installed. Love this game.

you'd be surprised actually... gta V runs extremely well on old hardware. This guy build rigs from ancient equipment and runs a variety of games to benchmark them :) https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCsgnjvCvJZgAdSMMRG_j0cw

Minecraft is Java though, it's always going to be slow :/  Absolute travesty that it has not been rewritten into C++.

That said, KSP seems to be written in C#, which is somewhere between the two. Easier to code than C++, but also slower.

Minecraft has been rewritten in C++ . All the current versions for console, mobile and Windows 10 are based on the same "Bedrock" edition (which is written in C++), although the legacy Java version is still supported and kept up-to-date for MacOS and Linux (and mods).

The core Unity game/physics engine is likely C++ for performance reasons, but all the game scripts that the devs use to build KSP on top of Unity are C#.

Interesting to know, I'd actually missed that... but I insist on many mods, so I suspect it will be years (or never) before it's a viable option for me :<

If you enjoy KSP and modded minecraft, then you might also enjoy Factorio.  (A lot of factorio player also play KSP and/or heavily modded minecraft).

Heavily modded Minecraft isn't really good. It's what you can build using the normal blocks that's nice. You don't need a Star Wars texture pack to build an AT-AT, you only need your imagination. Stone blocks ftw
