Geography of Duna

Recommended Posts

I was wondering if anybody knows of relatively flat regions on Duna which are optimzied for the landing of tall, large objects ( Starship clones ). I simply noticed that wherever I landed on Duna, the terrain is hilly, and things risk tipping over upon landing. Preferably, I would like them within 5-10 degrees of the equator, if anybody knows of such locations.

Adding some sauce... terrain bumpiness depends to a large degree on altitude: higher elevations typically are rougher. Maybe the same is true of low negative elevations ("below sea level" on waterless bodies -- don't know if there's any sites at -3000m elevation, but these may again be rough).

When looking for flat terrain, it's sensible to look for large areas that are at close to zero elevation. That's not a guarantee, though -- from experience I know that the several dark blots on this map are by no means equal.

IIRC the "Midland Sea" biome is the flattest area, most suitable to wide sprawling bases or landing high-speed spaceplanes -- though in the latter case you will find that it is only relatively flat and level.
