[Proposal] Luna-2 sphere

Recommended Posts

Sixty years ago, in 1959, the first artificial object touched another celestial body. It was the  Luna-2 probe. It contained two stainless steel spheres made of 72 pentagonal tiles each and explosive charge inside. The point was that while most of the tiles would be vaporized on impact at a high speed, one or two tiles facing backwards would be slowed down a bit by the explosion and survive the impact.

I believe this concept can be implemented as a KSP mod so we could celebrate the 60th anniversary of the event on September 13 with a couple of glossy tiles lying intact on the surface of the Mun (or RSS Moon).

P.S.
Probably, this.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Truncated_icosahedron
20 hexa + 12 penta
Every hex is splitted into 3 penta. (As we can see on the probe photo)
So, 20*3 + 12 = 72, with the same arc length of all edges

(But some edges should be longer than others, to get them equal after splitting the hexes into 3 pents)

In wings3d can be done easily.
