Rational Resources 2.0.6 [Apr 02, 2024]

I have a quick question about the added functionality to the M4435 Narrow-Band Scanner. It looks like it was given a science def that gives you the type of surface resource distribution applied to the planet. Any planet not in the stock or JNSQ system will need their own science defs written for this experiment, correct? Otherwise, the def will read off the default result?

Additionally, does the scanner do anything else with the planetary classification?

That's correct. OPM is supported too, actually.

No, the scanner does nothing else.

@JadeOfMaar

I'm making MKS compatibility patches for this mod and it's almost done. What's left are the production chains of the compressor.

I need to know how the compressor's throughput is balanced.

I know the base throughput of MKS's 2.5m MPU is equal to 0.094 times the throughput of the stock 2.5m ISRU , but I cannot work out the throughput conversion ratio between the RR compressor and MKS's 2.5m MPU.

@nemotiger Thanks for bringing this up. now I'm aware of a big issue and possibly others in these parts.

  • The RR Boxed Convert-O-Tron B ...is supposed to operate at 60% of the large stock Convert-O-Tron but actually operates at 100%.
  • The Boxed Convert-O-Tron A has 60% the capacity of B. Its ElectricCharge consumption also scales down in an extra step that it shouldn't be doing. I must fix that.
  • The Boxed Compressor has 100% the capacity of the large stock Convert-O-Tron but it is a different sort of converter. Its purpose is to pressurize or to super-cool applicable gas resources into their liquid forms, which I believe MKS has no business with. Unlike stock (which I believe is intentionally a parallel-processing capable machine) the Boxed Compressor is meant to be serial, reserving all its ability for a single resource at a time. I could make it actually work this way for the next update but I ponder how much I may upset players.

Thanks for the explanations.

The point of adding RR production chains (including the freezers) into MKS processing parts is simply making fuels. I can actually just patch the stock ISRU parts to include MKS's logistic modules to make RR more playable with MKS,  but then the stock ISRU will become extremely OP compared to other MKS production parts. Since the stock ISRU parts have a lot more capacity and doesn't require maintenances.

I never noticed that the stock ISRU can do parallel processing before, I always thought these machines are serial.

Someone did report that the MetalOre resource is not being defined for them. But I cannot help as MetalOre is defined within RR if not by EL or CRP and tries to always be defined. Either the person deleted RR's resource definition file and doesn't realize it, or there is a mod installed that deletes MetalOre for whatever reason. I assume this is affecting you as well since you're posting a log.

Everything's fine in a fresh KSP 1.9 install for me. I would need to know what mods you have installed that affect resources and cause RR patches to activate.

Since the USI mods use MetallicOre in place of MetalOre I would temporarily remove them first. As a test.

@JadeOfMaar is there a mod providing Resorce Conversion for RR you know of? I understand that @nemotiger was writing configs for MKS, are you willing to share?

The Universal Storage 2 Mod has processors capable of producing Methane, Oxygen and Hydrogen. However, what's missing is a Cryo Generator that converts them to their liquid counterparts. I'd like to just use one of the existing parts and write a new config. What would be a reasonable conversion ratio between the resources and the liquid versions? Where is density defined?

@infinite_monkey There is a part in RationalResourceParts that can convert resources from their gas form to liquid form.

For MKS patches, I will make a pull request after I have properly play testing them, but it will probably take some more time.

If you want them now, you can get it from https://github.com/nemotiger/My_KSP_Mod/tree/master/GameData/My_KSP_Mod/RationalResource/MKS

Hi there. By chance do you have a different mod that applies fuel switching to the Ore tanks? If yes then that is where the root of the problem is and I will need to know that mod's name. The Ore tanks should have a switcher name "RR Input" and should have menus like this:

You are probably right, but i have no idea with which of my other mods it might be conflicting.

The Ore tanks seems to be fine, i have that switcher on them. its just complaining about errors when patching, but i didn't see anything seriously broken.

Players may find themselves forced towards using Hydrolox rocketry since the required resources (Ore or Carbon Dioxide) for LiquidFuel may often be scarce meanwhile the requirements for Hydrolox (Hydrates, Hydrogen, Oxygen, Water) can be quite abundant.

This is definitely more interesting than I would have expected. Less engine choice is making this hard. Right now I'm using my first transfer windows to scan things with scansat and send relays, but I might have to actually learn to play this game to get my ISRU stuff to work.

Thanks for that..:)

Hi,

I wanted to ask about CO2 related items. It looks like CO2 can be collected by drilling in crust and scooped from atmo. I'm surprised there is no ISRU recipe to make CO2. It brings up a few questions:

  • It looks like I can split CO2 into Carbon and Oxygen, but I cant make it from Carbon and Oxygen. Seems like it's done on purpose, but not sure why.
  • If I was to make CO2, I can make Oxygen in a few ways, but I cant seem to make Carbon. Shouldn't there be a few choices to make Carbon, even from things like Rock?
  • Does the Scoop need to be moving to collect CO2 (atmo), or can it be attached to something stationary on the ground.

Thanks

@Gilph The reason for there being such lack in the CO2 ISRU department is I don't have or know a use case for producing CO2 for any primary role (apart from CO2 NTR which is demonstrated in RR Parts' clones of the stock NERVA). I'm curious to what you may have planned for it. I don't mind providing for these things so I'll include them.

In atmo, yes the scoop(s) need to be moving. The atmo harvesting system is broken and either entirely needs you to be moving (even when you drift at mm/s while landed. Pay attention to that because it really sucks in timewarp and thin atmo), or needs the airSpeedStatic key in the module to have a number in excess of 5000. And that's not guaranteed.

Thanks for the response.

I haven't scanned too many bodies yet in my save, but I was thinking about when I had a body with no ore or CO2 and wanted to use LFO. If I have access to Oxygen (I think 4 things can make Oxygen), then I can mine something like Rock, convert it to Carbon using some sort of low conversion ratio, make CO2 out of Carbon and Oxygen, then make LFO.  When I saw the CO2 splitter and did not see a CO2 generator, it seemed odd.

It's a shame about the scoop. I dont use SSTOs and rarely do much on bodies with atmo. If the air is thin anough, maybe I can just use a small craft in the upper atmo, or download a good SSTO from Kerbalx.

That won't happen. Ore is still present on every body but just hard to find. There is too much that Ore is useful for so it would be dumb to remove it completely.

That's a pretty interesting situation/preference. I must say that if you're going to farm an atmo edge (from the inside) for fuel it may have to be for a sci-fi engine. It's going to be very hard and not worth your time to devise something that can possibly manage a net gain on fuel when your Isp is weaksauce irl numbers like with any kerolox (LFO) engine and you have to fight off atmospheric drag like the ISS does.

A significant portion of why this mod was created can be summed up in a single specific picture:

Propellant_Depot_Evolution-800x450.jpg

And actually, there's a very good chance for airless worlds to have CO2 in space around them so you can go wild with that.

Good to know...flirted with the idea of a no ore save (meaning not using ore even though it's there), but too hard for my first RR playthrough.

Yeah, been doing that since I started KSP. I did land probes on stock Eve and Laythe, but that's about it. Cost me my JNSQ badge because I scanned all the worlds, but landed only on the airless and nearly airless ones.

Really? Does that mean I need the atmo sensor on scanners to airless worlds? Like the way Karborundum existed in bands around a body?

Thanks

Yes. Just like Karborundum, but the epicenter is at very low altitudes as to simulate trace atmosphere. The RR Sky Scanner will reveal them when you meet them.

Wait what? There's a superthin atmosphere outside the atmosphere?

Actual atmosphere? No. But if you've tried mining Karbonite or Karborundum while orbiting, it's just like that.
