Star Trek scientist. What is he thinking about?

In todays society, we speculate about Faster than light travel, time travel, and teleportation. In Star Trek; these things are completely commonplace. They can easily replicate anything or create a simulated reality. Wormholes, parallel universes and super-sophisticated A.I. would be considered emerging technology. What would be a good science or technology that a scientist could study only in theory in the Star Trek universe. We study the theory of the Alcubierre Drive in 2019 but we are far from creating a warp drive. What would a scientist be studying in Star Trek that is far from being realized?

Bioneural gel packs are new tech in Voyager, so there's room for improvement there.

Borg transwarp is not available to Federation, so they might look into backengineer that.

It's illegal, but laws change so cloaking tech.

Harnessing the Omega particle.

Or any other trans field phase shifting gobledygook.

A Dyson Sphere was apparently still beyond the Federation’s abilities... though they could create matter from energy which may have solved the problem of a solar system probably lacking the raw materials to construct one. And they also had the beginnings of transporter-replicator construction techniques (Future Janeway’s shield technology, which materialised hull plating over the existing ship. And some things from TNG touched on that kind of thing. That tech could allow them to literally replicate sections of construction directly into space, out of pure energy on a large scale.), so anyhoo... a Federation Dyson Sphere would probably be within distant reach of Star Trek engineering expertise, construction techniques and materials.

Iconian gateway technology... imagine just stepping through a door on earth and stepping onto Mars on the other side. Or Proxima B... or anywhere @_@!

(JJ Trek kinda went a bit silly with portable transporters that can send someone from earth to the Klingon home world.... in actual canon this would have been a big deal!)

A number of civilizations use instantaneous transport technology, where Starfleet transporters are clunky, inconsistent, and take several seconds to beam a person. I don't know all the details, but maybe there's some mechanism for better transporters which is unknown to the Federation.

How to make [treknobabble] interface with [random theoretical physics term] ["particles"|"waves"|"fields"] to make ["nano"|"quantum"|"Arcturan Mega-"|plural noun] that can save the ["ship"|"Federation"|random name generator ["Colony"|"Outpost"|"Base"]] from [threat of the week that kicked Worf's ass to make it look impressive|"the Borg"|"Q"].

Hmmm... let me see.

  1. Clearly there is some room to improve on, in the area of navigation computers. Then none of that "ease it out space dock Mr (insert name of favourite pilot)" would be necessary, leaving more time to be down in the holodeck getting freaked out by the latest malfunction.
  2. Coming up with reliable holodeck technology, at least to the point where it doesn't try to kill it's user, or the ship it's in every few weeks. Maybe the big bucks just aren't in it though.
  3. Personal weaponry could do with a prod, to avoid those "oh no, we're stuck behind this rock with only a handheld phaser to fight our way out" moments. Possibly something along the lines of grenades (stun, or well... not stun), as well as drones/rockets allowing for a little "death from above".
  4. If Starfleet Security was really on the ball, they'd be throwing all the Holdeck credits they could muster at research into anti transporter tech. I mean it's bad enough that your bridge gets seized every now and then, by some (known or unknown) species of space bad doods, but how long until those guys figure out what they can really do. You're going to need some protection from moments like "oh no... the borg cube just transported a Chevy Malibu into the space previously occupied by the Captain". Alternatively "Oh no... that species of apparently harmless first contact types just transported the heads of all the deck crew into a large jar of picked fish".
  5. Not science really (well... not at all) but some endeavours in the field of music wouldn't go amiss. The Federation types seem to have a block for anything later than the 1960's and not much that isn't classical or jazz.

Probably, how to undercut another Star Trek scientist and grab his job, as usual.

(See T.Pratchett's Unseen University for details. It's a documentary.)
