To the Mun Part 1 tutorial help needed

Recommended Posts

I'm trying to do To the mun part 1, and im having an issue. I have gotten to where I "Orbit" the mun, but the periapsis is below the surface, so I do as the tutorial says and place a maneuver to prograde so the orbit will be proper. However, even though the maneuver is place on the craft's orbit of the mun, when I attempt to make the maneuver prograde it creates a new planned orbit that escapes kerbin and ends up orbiting the sun? I don't know why its doing this and maybe its just me being a idiot. Either way please help me.  I can post screenshots if required.

If you're Pe is below the Mun's surface on approach before you do your retrograde capture burn, you need to burn radial (light blue circle) most likely out, not prograde.

I fired up the tutorial and that's what it says as well, perhaps you misread it?

Let me check it out

Let me ask you to clarify a few things first.  Technically, if your Pe is below the surface, you aren’t in orbit, right?  So are you talking about your encounter, or trying to create a full orbit around Mun?  For fine tuning, once you get the capture, select your engine with a right-click and move the Thrust slider way down (~25%?) so that you can fine-tune.  To get your first Mun orbit, really don’t worry too much about the altitude of your capture.

You can also forget using the maneuver nodes to make your actual orbit.  Position for a retrograde burn, and just fire it up at your Pe until you get an orbit.  THEN, you can play with fine tuning your Ap and Pe.

Happy to help!

When I was first learning I liked to imagine my orbit as a hula-hoop I'm holding around my waist.

Prograde/retrograde makes the hula-hoop bigger/smaller.

Radial in/out is like shifting the hula-hoop closer/further from one side of your body.

Normal/anti-normal is like lowering one hand and raising the other so that the hula hoop is tilted.
