KAL-1000 Bombardmemt challenge.

Recommended Posts

Mission description:

Hostile forces have taken control of the Island runway and plan to use it to launch an attack on the KSC in the future. Radio jamming is very intense so drones will have no signal beyond the KSC. Pilots are otherwise occupied and none could be spared. Your goal is to launch attacks on the Island runway facilities using the KAL-1000 as an autonomous guidance system.

Rules:

1. ABSOLUTELY NO PROBE CORES OR KERBALS IN OR ABOVE THE WATER.

2. Seriously, no remote controlling your projectile.

3. You can have as many KAL-1000 units as you want.

4. Stock + DLC parts only. Stock atmosphere only.

5. Multiple projectiles or multiple launches is fine. But once you have attacked the Island no more new vehicle launches.

6. You are not required to use any DLC parts if you don't want to. Not even the titular KAL-1000. Firing dumbfire rocket launchers or artillery at the Island is allowed. But obviously this limits accuracy and automation somewhat.

Scoring:

Score is calculated by ore yield dropped on different targets:

+1 point for every 75 Ore that hits somewhere on the main Island. (I.e. 600 ore to the beach would be 8 points). No limit.

+5 extra points per 75 Ore that hits the Island runway. No limit.

+10 extra points for every 75 Ore that hits the hangars. Limit 3000 ore per hangar. (That's 800 possible bonus points from 60 tonnes of Ore).

+25 extra points for every 75 Ore that hits the tower. Limit 1500 Ore for the whole tower. (That's 500 possible bonus points from 15 tonnes of Ore)

-1 point for every full 3000 cost spent. You may recover anything on the KSC lawn. If you plan on using big expensive non-recoverable rockets, they better work.

Ore must detonate to count. Unexploded Ore doesn't count toward your score.

My own tests so far indicate that cruise missiles are probably better than low-TWR ballistic missiles, which seem fairly unstable in their flight direction. Seeing as the whole "balancing on a pillar of thrust for several seconds with no stability enhancement" part is pretty inherently divergent in trajectory. That being said you can also increase the thrust with separatrons and tilt it by a known amount to eliminate imprecise trajectory while keeping the ability to hit the target.
