Yes. You could, in fact, calculate the required energy to compress the gas by solving for the amount of energy produced during the ascent. Plus efficiency losses.

Energy out and energy in (factoring in efficiency losses) are always equal.

Thanks, I assumed this may be the case. I don't have the skills to make a detailed calculation.
