Old Parts - New Tricks

Recommended Posts

Am in the process of updating some dusty *cough* *cough* parts;

some have mbm, tga, png textures. Converting them to dds isn't an issue (flip-flip save)

I want to know if can add normal / etc without having to fire up blender(doesn't work on my machine)/unity?

can I generate the normal and attach in the part.cfg using texture = ?

how about other types of textural enhancements?

I believe you would need to change the material that uses the texture if it's not already using a normal map. This is set in Unity - I think you can change shaders (which correspond to materials?) in a MM patch but haven't done this myself. Sorry - not real familiar with this (so take with a few grains of salt).

You can accomplish this using PartVariants, but that's a kind of clunky solution for the default part.

brings out the Duct Tape...

can you have only one variant on a part?

can one directly import .mu into unity?

The dev team ( @JPLRepo ) keeps the PartTools up to date for Unity (https://forum.kerbalspaceprogram.com/index.php?/topic/160487-parttools-updated/), and @taniwha maintains the blender plugin for import/export (https://forum.kerbalspaceprogram.com/index.php?/topic/40056-12-17-blender-280-mu-importexport-addon/).

You can have more than one variant per ModulePartVariants partmodule. (https://forum.kerbalspaceprogram.com/index.php?/topic/173441-partvariant-guide/)

blender won't run on my system. (long story)

have tried importing an existing .mu into Unity (correct version with the correct part tools) - haven't been able to get it in

let me rephrase the question about number of variants - is it possible to just have one variant instead of more?

You can create a single VARIANT and set it as the baseVariant, then it will only have one variant, but the variant icon will still show up for it.
