Kerbal Inventory System (KIS) can't equip tools

For some reason, when I attempt to equip my engineer with a wrench, nothing happens.  The little green number in the window is [1] but when i type it, nothing happens.  I tried right-clicking the part and clicking "equip" but nothing happens ether.  My wrench is in the kerbal's backpack but it doesn't equip.  Any ideas on what is wrong?

To add to my post, I should mention that nothing larger than a wrench fits in my backpack.  Not even an electric screwdriver.

Sounds like you are using some backpack other than the standard inventory every kerbal has on EVA, because those certainly take KIS electric screwdrivers. Try right-clicking on the kerbal and selecting Inventory, and put the electric screwdriver there and then do the right click equip.
