KSP won't start

KSP1.7.3; Windows 10 64-bit; steam version

Problem: 

Whenever I try to start KSP I only get a white screen and after a few minutes the message that the game is not responding. I've tried waiting for up to 30 min. but still nothing. I've updated all drivers, reinstalled KSP and steam, checked my anti virus, deleted all virtual network adapters, tried to launch older versions (oldest I've tried was 1.0.5) but nothing worked so far. I've had the game running on the same machine before but that was years ago and I don't remember the version.

I know, I'm not using MSI Afterburner or any other software (that I know off) that uses the Rivatuner Statistics Server.

Update 2: Left the game running for a few hours and it seems like it's just incredibly slow.

That's interesting... why wasn't it running in Opengl from the start?

It also works when forcing it to use DirectX11 and the regular OpenGL. Seems like it doesn't matter as long as something gets forced.
