Trouble modifying an existing rocket question

When I download someone elses rocket I have trouble changing it's configuration.  Example : I download the Soviet Sputnik R7 rocket and try to pop a new capsule on top.  The remaining booster seems to freeze up and won't let me drag a new part on top.  I think I'm supposed to re-root the rest of it but I'm not sure how to do that.   Also -  when I am designing a rocket inside the VAB is there a display to show me the complete list of parts it's made of or a way to see the name of each part with a mouse click or something?
