  1. 1. How should heatsheilds work in KSP2?

    • Regular KSP1 heatshields
      21
    • Procedural heatsheilds that you could "paint" onto parts
      21
    • Heatsheilds on all parts but they can be toggled on/off like the textures in game

How about E: Some parts have integrated heatshields e.g. on the leading edge/underside of space plane wings/fuselage pieces and the bottoms of command pods, you can choose how much ablator to include (if any!) as you wish- it's already a thing with the KV pods in Making History so there's precedent in KSP already- and also include the set of standalone heatshields like at present in KSP but with the possibility of some additional parts e.g. reflective heat shields as seen in the film Sunshine. Trying to 'paint' heat shielding onto a ship could lead to you missing an area that was at a strange angle and your ship and its crew ending up extra-crispy as a result.

Actually, I’m comfortable with the heatshields currently in KSP1. Some radial heatshields would be nice though, for spaceplanes.

KSP 2 is getting decals you can place onto the hull, so why not the ability to coat parts with ablator, or liquid explosive for extra boom?

Spoiler

Is there any difference between coating stuff with ablator or liquid explosive?

It’s frankly annoying trying to design a ship around what heat shield will work instead of the other way around.

As such anything is better than the current system.

Agreed. My stock starship is having problems trying to not burn its airbrake out.

Heatshields should be jettisonnable parts, like now, with concave top (to put bottom details of cabins inside), and maybe sometimes have a short backshell with RCS engines to drop this all before landing.

Painting makes no sense as the only moment when anyone can see the painting is when a scorched heatshield hits the ground. They are either inside interstage, or high in the sky, or lying with face down.

I think that what he means is that you can add a heat shield to any part as if you were painting. An ablative coating on a spaceplane would be great.
