Dmagic Magnetometer not functioning as ScanSat Ore Scanner

Recommended Posts

As you may know, the Magnetometer Boom from the DMagic Orbital Science Mod also includes an Ore Scanner Function if you have ScanSat installed. However, this is not functioning in my Installation. The Information Window in the VAB/SPH says too it should have the "Module: Resource Scanner-Ore". I have this Problem since 1.7.2 or even earlier (not sure anymore) and first hoped 1.8 and the following Mod Updates might fix this, but they didn't. I already asked in the according Threads for help, didn't get any replies. Does anyone have similar Problems?

And yes, I tried reinstalling it several Times.

I don't normally use the mag boom for resource scanning because it's got a very narrow range of operating altitudes (30 to 60 km).

However, I threw a quick over-engineered probe into a low polar Minmus orbit in a new sandbox 1.7.3 save (DMOS 1.4.2) and it worked fine.

If you're trying to scan at the right altitude then there's probably something wrong in your install or a clash with another mod and we'll need logs to try and figure that out.

It's a completely new Install and DMagic and ScanSat are the first two Mods I've added to it but the Problem still persists. As of now, I can only supply the Log Files from an older Installation:

Current ones will follow shortly.

Nothing conclusive from those logs but there are a lot of lines like:

[Dynamic Battery Storage]: [Controller] [Scansat Duna (unloaded)]: Regenerating electrical data
[Dynamic Battery Storage]: [Controller] [Scansat Duna (unloaded)]: Could not find an electrical storage part

Plus other errors and exceptions coming from DynamicBatteryStorage.

Checking the version hash, it's different from the one I have in my current 1.7.3 game, so it might be worth checking that you've got the latest compatible version installed.

I just completely deleted KSP from my Harddrive and the installed it again with DMagic, ScanSat and Module Manager. No other Mods. Here is the ModuleManager.ConfigCache for that; the last output_log still is from the Installation with a couple of Mods. I can send it too if it helps you.

And yes, I tried it and it's still not functioning.

KSP hasn't written output_log.txt into the KSP folder for a while now.

The detailed logs and crash dumps now go to %AppData%\..\LocalLow\Squad\Kerbal Space Program

When you ran your new install to generate the module manager cache it should have written an output_log.txt there (or player.log). Although the ksp.log file can also be useful sometimes as it has timing information that can help tell how frequently messages are being written.

Your MM cache looks fine, with the correct definition for the SCANsat modules in dmmagBoom. (The older MM cache you posted also had no errors in the dmmagBoom record)

In the KSP directory? Stupid me can't find them right now

ksp.log is in the KSP directory. All the other log files are in the Windows Appdata folder which can be reached by just copying the link I gave (%AppData%\..\LocalLow\Squad\Kerbal Space Program) into Windows Explorer address bar

That's weird. If I copy the Link it leads to nowhere and if I search for single bits of it it leads anywhere but to something related to KSP. Except for "Squad" or "Kerbal Space Program" of course, which lead into the main KSP directory (Steam/steamapps/common). Or I'm just flat-out dumb right now.

That's odd. Try this instead. It's a different shortcut to the same folder:

%userprofile%\AppData\LocalLow\Squad\Kerbal Space Program

Copy that line of text. Press the windows key on your keyboard. Press Ctrl-V to paste and then hit Enter to accept the offered best match.

So there it is. It turns out my Laptop doesn't show an "AppData"-Folder in the "user"-Directory (WHY?) and searching for it takes ages. It still ist two days old but at least better than the last one. Maybe I will get a current one soon.

Because Microsoft have set quite a few folders to hidden on the belief that most users will never need to touch anything inside them so it's better to not show them at all. (They have a point - some of the files in some of those folders can break parts of Windows if tampered with carelessly but it's also where quite a few programs hide their settings, log and debug files - like Unity/KSP)

500+ MB ! Ouch that's going to take me a while to download (curse my crappy ASDL). For future reference plain text files like this zip really well often ending up as little as 5% of their original size.

KSP is running since 2 hours, still don't have a new output_log. Does it get created when I properly close KSP? Since I am fiddling with the mods I alway force quitted it so that might explain why the file is two day old?

Crappy Internet? Living in Germany too?

Well I'm glad I moved to Flensburg recently. The Public Utility (hope that's the right Translation) here provides nice and fast Fibreglass Access while most of Germany is supplied by the more or less Government owned Telekom with crappy copper Telephone wires. On the Countryside it's even quite common to have no Internet Access at all. But I guess this Topic rather belongs into PN.

Maybe. My output_log is showing a timespamp from a few hours ago and I've also got KSP running in another window.

That last log has a LOT (over 1.2 million) of repeated messages from DynamicBatteryStorage + lots of nullref exceptions. So it's still something you should look into.

Scansat doesn't seem to be complaining about anything important.

You could post the ksp.log file from the main game folder. That gets updated continually and has most of the same information as the output_log

By the way, what are the names of the vessels with the dmmagBoom that you tried scanning with? Might give me somewhere to start looking for an error message.

Usually something like Scansat (Body) or (Body) Probe. I use that https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=1858841472 basic Design loaded up with Experiments from various Mods to go pretty much anywhere. And the MagBoom is alway part of it and I alway tried scanning.

And the Log File will follow shortly if I find it quickly. If not, "tomorrow" in the morning.

Here it is:

And of course I don't send Ion Probes to Duna or Eve, I change the Propulsion Sytem for there :D

Just tried shutting down KSP myself and the output_log didn't update immediately but when I came back from the kitchen after grabbing a sandwich the timestamp had changed. So it looks like there's some sort of delay. Possibly copying it from a temp location somewhere?

That's a nicer size and the loading section is very clean and simple but when you load the save from your old version it starts complaining repeatedly about settings and modules that are missing (because the mods aren't installed). Would it be possible to quickly start a new sandbox game and put a simple scansat into orbit around Mun or Minmus and try scanning with the magboom? If scanning still fails then post that log which shouldn't have all the background noise of the older save.

PS: random thought - what are your scansat resource settings?

Savegame Name: Snabox, it's a Relay named "ScanSat Test" orbiting the Mun. I tried starting an Ore Scan via Action Group; maybe you can see that from the Logs. (I'm not sure if I already wrote it somewhere here, but in the Action Group Editor you still can create an AG for starting an Ore Scan, but it doesn't do anything). I did not disable Stock Scanning but apart from that I don't see any changes in the ScanSat Options.

And now I really have to sleep, will continue later today.
