Updating to 1.8.1

Recommended Posts

So going to bite the bullet and upgrade my game. Presently running 1.4.5 on a Linux machine...  runs fine... some stuttering which I believe is from Unity as others have reported but no issues playing. Anyway...  always a little apprehensive that I'm going to destroy my current career game or ruin something so. What folders/files should I copy and backup in case of upgrade/install fail? TIA

Everything. Backup the whole KSP directory. Finding back the correct versions of the working Add:Ons for your current game in case of rollback can be overwhelming - few maintainers support old KSP versions, and it's usually unclear to find the less older version compatible to your working instalment.

What I did:

Put my old KSP installation aside. Then made a fresh 1.8.1 installation and added all my mods. Finally, I copied my old save game folder into the new installation.

This way I a) have my old installation always available as a fallback, and b) I can be sure that all mods are good for 1.8.1.

From my about 100 mods, only three weren't available for 1.8.1, but I found good alternatives.

I am running 1.8.1 but for the sake of keeping track of my mods, I use KSP - AVC (Add-on Version Checker) which has a great startup screen of mods your using and a "Copy to Clipboard" menu so you can keep track of them in txt format. If I need too upgrade later, make a new install, or share with others, I have that list.

Thanks for the info...  I only use a few mods so ti shouldn't be difficult..  KER, KAC, Docking Alignment tool and Science.

The Add'Ons are not the only source of glitches. A lot of things changed on the KSP guts, some of them rendered even some vanilla crafts of mine unusable. This can be particularly nasty with flying ones.
