Rotating parts which eventually explode: what is happening here?

Recommended Posts

This is whats happening:

when the station loads in, some parts are crooked like this. when i try to quicksave and reload to get rid of the problem, the problem either persists or the craft explodes. when i turn off and restart the game this problem persists. what is happening here and is there any way to fix this??

Make a backup of your save file in case it gets worse.

Alt-f12 lets you enable unbreakable joints. Try turning that on, saving, reloading, etc. to see if it has a positive effect.

Your problem gets caused when multiple SAS modules (or other forces) push different parts in different directions. It starts as a wobble, sometimes explodes craft, and sometimes causes twisted parts like you have.

Consider using the mod Kerbal Joint Reinforcement. That probably won't fix your broken station but it might save a future station.

ive also been assembling the station using the construction ports from USI. Could that have something to do with it?

I haven't used USI but any docking port can cause the problem. The smaller/weaker the port, and the more mass you have on each side of the port, the more likely it is to twist. In stock, the klaw (AGU) is prone to the problem, while the Docking Port Senior is least likely to have the issue.

It doesn't look like your bends are at docking ports but maybe redocking parts of the ship will reconfigure the bad connections. Or cause another explosion :(

Autostruts can also contribute to the problem. When parts are autostrutted to the root or heaviest part, docking disconnects the struts and recalculates the new root or heaviest for the combine vessel, possibly connecting parts in unwanted ways.
