Alright here's my entry for the HERMES class!

One Fast Doggo

Spoiler

And the screenshot from my best run:

DnGeoDZ.jpg

After takeoff I performed an initial burn to high apoapsis, then a second burn on reentry to reach 4963.0 m/s.

Edit: realized previous post was orbital rather than surface velocity (although the GUI gives airspeed 4774 m/s). Here is a screenshot from a subsequent run showing max surface velocity 4806.7 m/s at 48.5 km, taken immediately one canard blew up (craft otherwise survived).

Hi!

This is my entry for the Waveraider, although I'm not sure if this qualifies as the probe/missile/callitwhatever lost its control unit. Nevertheless, the rocket performed admirably ;) reaching anyway 4409ms  (only captured 4408 in the screenshot) at 47900m

I used as mothership my KRB-71 SSTO reconverted to only-airbreathing, changing the Rapiers for Whiplashes, removing the oxidizer from the tanks, the monopropellant, the RCS blocks and the solar panels. The probe is mounted topside using a small hardpointBuQgeIK.png

Standard climbr6XvBsR.png

The separation is flawless at less than 20km5fOl8HH.png

You can see the KRB-71 left behindjYH7JaX.png

And this was the final moment, after losing the control unit and still pushing until 4408.5ms.xWCtfSV.png

This is the missile itself, less than 5.5 tons and just 23 partsgeKmtSu.png

I have to say I was quite upset when I didn't reach 4500ms, thinking that the top class for the challenge was 4500 instead of 4000 :D

Cheers!

J

Must a vehicle not exceed 50 km at all, or just dip under 50 km for the final screenshot? I.E. can I yeet it into orbit (or into Kerbin escape, or into the sun), then fly back through the edge of Kerbin's atmosphere at mach 20 in some crazy dense ion-propelled bullet?

Also Define "mothership?" Must the mothership leave the ground and is a Kerbal considered a valid Waverider entry?

At more than 1000G Summer Kerman should be renamed Porridge Kerman :D And of course should be... how to say it...  physically not able to open a parachute :P

Oh BTW, the thousand G is extremely conservative. Actual, instantaneous launch forces were of course 0 to 4176 m/s in 1/25th of a second (1 physics timestep). So in reality it is easily 10000 G. (100 km/s^2, mach 1 in 3 milliseconds and warp 1 in under an hour level acceleration). For what that's like, imagine being an artillery shell.

Apparently Mantis Shrimp accelerate their fists this hard.

>4000 m/s waverider entry BEFORE going above 50km.

Basically just the same as the other one but replaced the engine with one 3x more powerful and cut an Oscar full of fuel to save weight.

Breaking parts are not a problem. They are designed to be temporary wings. As the vehicle is now going on an interplanetary trajectory, they serve no further purpose.

@JorgeCS, here is the badge! http://uZXd5ve.png?1 btw, that looks quite a bit like a D-21!

http://uZXd5ve.png?1 @Pds314, here is yours!

Once again sorry for not monitoring this thread enough.
