Next time, the TPA rovers will arrive and look for good ore spots. At the next transfer window, a Tylo beacon will be launched too.

First, I have some other things to do.

Part 22: Station Shenanigans Round 5

It was a normal day at Minmus. Construction had finished on a Minmus beacon, and then the drill module thought it was a bird and tried to fly away.

Spoiler

20200613142805_1.jpg

The solar panels are actually flapping wildly.

20200613142905_1.jpg

Once the solar panels shattered, it calmed down.

20200613143106_1.jpg

Downside is that it's too far away from the rest of the base to be used, and is tipped over.

20200613143250_1.jpg

Just to be safe, Herzon removed the robotic hinges holding up the panels, and autostrutted the panels to grandparent.

20200613143339_1.jpg

20200613143416_1.jpg

With that out of the way, the Minmus beacon could be launched.

At Pol, the Karborundum drill resumed mining to help fill the beacon.

20200613175853_1.jpg

20200613180106_1.jpg

20200613180749_1.jpg

Karbo get. Next stop, Minmus.

20200613181453_1.jpg

But first, ASC staff realized that the beacon was missing a docking port and beacon upgrades, so a fix was built.

20200613181646_1.jpg

LET ME WARP!!!!!!!!

20200613181658_1.jpg

Did get a nice view, at least.

The downside of the Minmus beacon was that all the other beacons were LB-15s and couldn't warp to Minmus because of Jool's gravity.

Spoiler

20200614104312_1.jpg

As a result. another patch vehicle was launched to attack LB-10s.

20200614104406_1.jpg

20200614104656_1.jpg

Along the way, some nice screenshots were captured.

20200614104900_1.jpg

20200614105129_1.jpg

20200614105700_1.jpg

20200614110129_1.jpg

Joe was supposed to come up with a witty quote, but he forgot to do it. One minute less during snack breaks for him!

20200614110424_1.jpg

Oh, we're at Pol now.

20200614110811_1.jpg

Spacetime is going to be very broken by the time this space program ends.

20200614111234_1.jpg

And now the Karbo miner can reach Minmus.

20200614111706_1.jpg

And stop at the base to refuel.

20200614112025_1.jpg

For now, it will serve as the base's drill.

20200614112313_1.jpg

If it would work!

The Bop beacon was too inconvenient to reach, so a new one was made for a lower Kerbin orbit.

Spoiler

20200614144401_1.jpg

Because of a lack of patience (and fuel in the miner), the beacon was filled up with Karborundum in the VAB, to much cost.

20200614144545_1.jpg

20200614144720_1.jpg

20200614144935_1.jpg

After over a joy (Alternis year) at the base, the Minmus crew was getting rotated for a new crew.

Spoiler

20200614151408_1.jpg

Except the Kraken decided to pay a visit. The rocket isn't moving, even though it should.

20200614152410_1.jpg

The engine plate causes it to hover in midair, for whatever reason.

20200614152821_1.jpg

After removing the engine plate, the launch went smoothly.

20200614152914_1.jpg

20200614153229_1.jpg

The launch also included a power expansion for the beacon. Docking ports are a life saver when you underprepare.

20200614153441_1.jpg

20200614153654_1.jpg

20200614153833_1.jpg

20200614153917_1.jpg

AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA

20200614154257_1.jpg

Took long enough.

20200614154302_1.jpg

20200614154606_1.jpg

20200614154828_1.jpg

Landed a bit far away, and out of fuel.

20200614154907_1.jpg

The pod's RCS can be used to hover, though.

20200614155102_1.jpg

The crew transport will stay as a permanent crew expansion module.

20200614160008_1.jpg

The two crews get out to say hi.

Top: Frorim, Gerbas, Kencott, Adden, Modorf, and Gregford Kerman.    Bottom: Herzon, Tefen, Traory, and Admin Kerman.

20200614160452_1.jpg

The rocket scooter was sent to crash because it was getting replaced.

20200614160500_1.jpg

20200614162627_1.jpg

The new replacement was a rocket truck. Slower, but able to transport KIS parts.

20200614162850_1.jpg

Seats 2, and is completely RCS powered.

20200614163208_1.jpg

The first goal was to add landing legs to the Karbo miner so the drill would work.

20200614163446_1.jpg

Now the drill can drill.

20200615114918_1.jpg

The current status of the base.

The Mun base hasn't recieved much attention, so ASC upper management made the executive decision to shut down the base.

Spoiler

20200615115109_1.jpg

The Mun base is nice, but it hasn't recieved much use during its lifetime.

20200615115315_1.jpg

A return vehicle was constructed to send the kerbals there home.

20200615115639_1.jpg

Before leaving, Bill, Natabin, Admin, and Virfry got one last group photo.

20200615115737_1.jpg

20200615115820_1.jpg

The transfer window back to Kerbin will take a while.

Back at Minmus, the new drill module was complete.

Spoiler

20200615120647_1.jpg

20200615120712_1.jpg

Based on the crew module, it uses RCS to hover to its destination from the launchpad.

20200615121023_1.jpg

Lead engineer Modorf Kerman went out to inspect the new module and remove the RCS. The tank was too heavy to remove, so Frorim came out to help.

20200615121113_1.jpg

And did some Kerbal bowling.

20200615121123_1.jpg

Modorf sticks the landing! Frorim, not so much.

20200615121215_1.jpg

20200615121253_1.jpg

Modorf went to go plug in the new module, and started spinning, even though it isn't clear in the picture.

20200615121300_1.jpg

Modorf must have a really high dexterity modifier, because she landed perfectly again.

20200615121340_1.jpg

Modorf went flying again.

20200615121353_1.jpg

And still lands perfectly!

The Minmus beacon is severely underpowered, but the RCS truck was built for this.

Spoiler

20200615123339_1.jpg

Adden and Modorf flying it up to the beacon.

20200615123711_1.jpg

0.083 tons too heavy? Really?

One quickload later and the truck was back on the surface. This time, Frorim joined them to help.

20200615124037_1.jpg

The lack of extra seats meant Frorim had to hold onto the ladder.

20200615124747_1.jpg

Now Modorf can install the solar panels. KIS is an amazing mod.

20200615124909_1.jpg

Complete overkill, but that's the point.

20200615125428_1.jpg

20200615125638_1.jpg

Frorim jumped off and got inside early because he wanted snacks.

20200615125840_1.jpg

Did you plug in your space truck device?

20200615144245_1.jpg

Fully fueled and unneeded, the Karbo miner went back to Pol.

20200615144755_1.jpg

The crew return vehicle was built.

20200615145012_1.jpg

Thanks to beacons, the travel time goes from hours to minutes.

20200615145038_1.jpg

20200615145105_1.jpg

20200615145246_1.jpg

20200615145408_1.jpg

20200615145555_1.jpg

Traory Kerman now holds the record for most time in space, at 534 days. The kerbals in charge of the ribbons weren't sure what days are, but it was in the training manual.

The Mun crew returned too.

Spoiler

20200615145947_1.jpg

20200615150108_1.jpg

20200615150348_1.jpg

Admin Kerman has the second most time in space now.

Gerbas was trying to watch KerbTube when the video stopped loading. It turns out the main antenna broke, so she went out to fix it. In other news, a kerbal is stranded in space over Minmus.

Spoiler

20200615150658_1.jpg

20200616094821_1.jpg

Once the antenna was fixed, it picked up Barteny's scrap on a collision with a mountain. ASC staff had been trying to tell them about it, but the antenna was broken.

20200616094921_1.jpg

Modorf quickly started the RCS truck.

20200616095111_1.jpg

 "Get over here!" -Modorf

"But the company that launched me says they want the pod recovered too!" -Bartney

"Forget the pod, it's gonna crash!" -Modorf

20200616095854_1.jpg

"But they want it recov-"

"Just be glad you aren't still in there, heading towards the mountain."

Next time, more station shenanigans and some other stuff, I haven't planned that far yet.

I haven't abandoned this, I'm just playing 1.10 with less mods while waiting for Kopernicus to update.

I decided to do the Apollo Style Redux challenge, and figured I should post it here. This is a modded entry, but still follows all of the rules. Mods installed:

Spoiler
  • B9PartSwitch
  • BasicDeltaV
  • BetterBurnTime
  • BetterTimeWarp
  • Chatterer
  • CraftManager
  • EVE
    • SciFi VE

Intermission: Apollo Style Redux

In some parallel universe, the Kerbals decided to make a rocket to go to the Mun, Kerpollo style.

Spoiler

20200714171952_1.jpg

The rocket is designed to achieve as many points as possible.

20200714172007_1.jpg

The command pod has space for three kerbals, and has abort engines installed.

20200714172024_1.jpg

The lander is inside a fairing, two-stage, and below the CSM.

On with the launch already.

Spoiler

20200714172531_1.jpg

The rocket is like a shorter, thinner Saturn V.

20200714172602_1.jpg

Pretty standard launch.

20200714172855_1.jpg

20200714172953_1.jpg

20200714173230_1.jpg

TMI burn is a free-return trajectory.

20200714173401_1.jpg

20200714173513_1.jpg

I used a decoupler instead of a separator...

20200714173529_1.jpg

At least docking ports can decouple on EVA.

20200714173609_1.jpg

Problem solved.

20200714173710_1.jpg

20200714173744_1.jpg

To the Mun!

Spoiler

20200714173905_1.jpg

Welcome to the Mun.

20200714175627_1.jpg

Subsat deployment.

20200714175822_1.jpg

Jeb and Bill are landing, while Bob stays in orbit.

20200714180137_1.jpg

Armstrong memorial spotted!

20200714180214_1.jpg

20200714180309_1.jpg

20200714180350_1.jpg

Landed with no fuel left in the lower stage.

20200714180506_1.jpg

Flag planted. For reference, Jeb is orange and Bill is green.

20200714180538_1.jpg

First faceplant on the Mun: Check!

20200714180634_1.jpg

The lander included a folded rover.

20200714180717_1.jpg

Which is now unfolded.

20200714181010_1.jpg

Quick stop for a Mun rock.

20200714181055_1.jpg

10km away from the lander, this should be a good spot to deploy the first SEP.

20200714181154_1.jpg

To save space, the four SEPs are stored in a cargo container, but have to be manually assembled.

20200714181244_1.jpg

20200714181409_1.jpg

20200714181832_1.jpg

The next SEP was set up inside a crater, over 1km away from the previous to follow challenge guidelines.

20200714181904_1.jpg

20200714182000_1.jpg

20200714182217_1.jpg

Random crack in the ground.

20200714182712_1.jpg

Due to the Kraken attacking the wheels, the rover had to be parked on a Mun stone so it didn't drift away.

20200714182809_1.jpg

SEP 3 set up.

20200714183035_1.jpg

And SEP 4.

20200714183059_1.jpg

With that done, it was time to head back to orbit.

20200714183157_1.jpg

20200714183457_1.jpg

20200714183617_1.jpg

20200714183645_1.jpg

As Bill climbed the ladder, the rover phased through the memorial and drifted away.

20200714183754_1.jpg

Liftoff!

20200714184115_1.jpg

In orbit.

20200714184517_1.jpg

Rendezvous with the CSM.

20200714184703_1.jpg

Jeb sent the MEM burning retrograde to crash into the Mun.

20200714184817_1.jpg

And yes, he is safe.

20200714184736_1.jpg

The MEM later crashed into the Mun.

20200714184949_1.jpg

Heading home.

20200714185045_1.jpg

20200714185144_1.jpg

20200714185213_1.jpg

20200714185221_1.jpg

Docking port detaches to make way for the 2 drogue chutes.

20200714185252_1.jpg

The drogues are detached once the main chutes deploy.

20200714185324_1.jpg

20200714185354_1.jpg

MET: 7 days, 58 minutes.

Adding everything up:

Spoiler
  • The 3 Little Kerbals: +20
  • A Flag on the Mun?!: +5
  • Mun Buggie: +15
  • Abort! Abort!: +15
  • Konked Out!: No kerbals were harmed in the making of this mission.
  • Return for Free: +10
  • No More MEM!: +5

  • Splashies!: +5
  • MEM Hugger: +10
  • SubSat: +10
  • Minmalist!: This was clearly on the Mun.
  • No More Docking?: +5
  • Parachute Problems: +10
  • Saturn-Alike: +10

  • Landing Accuracy: At the memorial, +20
  • Rover: Over 10km away, +20
  • SEP's: Four, each over 1km apart, +20

Final score (according to me): 285 points!
