Shuttle Challenge v6 - The STS thread [Stock and Mod Friendly] - ANNOUNCEMENT: v7 IS LIVE!

Recommended Posts

After quite some time in the making I am (again somewhat proudly) presenting my submission for STS Mun-2 to STS Mun-4 which completes the surface base that I have started here.

** Spoiler alert **

This features the return of my kOS shuttle launch script which has been refined to work (better) with my updated Booster stack as of KSP 1.10.1 and it now has the ability to launch multiple shuttles at once! I did some (limited) research but I believe this could be a worlds first in KSP for:

  • Launching 3 crafts  (shuttles) to orbit at once using an autopilot (citation needed!)

There used to be a KSP weekly challenge for two rockets at the same time on Reddit but I didn't find any entry that launched three. Theoretically my script can launch an arbitrary amount of shuttles at once but my CPU already struggles with three so I am planning on leaving it at that ;)

The kOS script is open source for evaluation and/or whatever shenanigans you can come up with :D If you want to use the launch script yourself and / or have suggestions for improvement I am happy to accept Pull-Requests.

The craft files used in the mission can be downloaded here - note that these craft files include my standard clamp stand and not the rover-launchtower used in the video as that one kills framerates and is rather slow to maneuver. If you really want the rover-launchtower craftfiles PM me and I will share them of course as well:

As with my last submission I got a higher badge than I was eligible for I am now officially applying for this one:

@sturmhauke as a computer scientist yourself I am sure you can relate:

I have landed at the KSC Runway after five tries for the STS 1a mission!

I believe I can apply for the STS 1a Commander Badge:

Also, can someone tell me the difference between the silver feathers and the gold feathers on the badge? Is the silver feathers for people who used mods? I didn't use mods, so I should get the gold feathers if that is the case.

Nevermind, I read the meaning of the badges.

After managing to get the shuttle with the payload to orbit (It was not easy), I deployed the payload (which was a recreation of the one showed in the STS 1b), and landed back at the KSC Runway, thus completing the Bonus STS 1b mission.

@sturmhauke(I don't know if I am suppose to ping you for the mission submission; if not, sorry for the inconvenience)

I have once again done a mission in this challenge, STS 2a, where I deployed two geostationary satellites from 205 km up, then a boost stage brought them up to the geostationary orbit. I then landed the shuttle by the KSC.

Here is my proof:

I have done another mission in this challenge, Kerbin STS-3. I launched a telescope to a 600km  orbit with an inclination of 30 degrees. I deployed the telescope and put its two solar panels on by two engineers. I then deorbited the shuttle and landed at the KSC Runway.

I have, for the thousandth time (I have literally nothing else to do but these missions), completed another mission in this challenge, STS-4. First, I launched a shuttle with 6 crew into a 370km, 26 degree orbit. I then launched another shuttle to rescue the crew, and then headed back down to Kerbin and landed at the KSC Runway.

@sturmhauke

After 2 days of launching the modules of the space station with the Determination Space Shuttle, then having to land the Determination at the KSC Runway, I have completed the space station missions of STS 5-8. The STS Station was launched into a 310km orbit with a service, habitation, and two scientific modules.

Space Shuttle Armstrong carries Jedediah and Valentina Kerman on the STS-1a/b flight

Full Imgur album of the mission: https://imgur.com/a/RNnBtB9

I completed STS-1a/b with my new Armstrong-class shuttle. Jeb and Val succesfully carried the fuel pod to a circular 157km orbit with an error of only 30m, and safely returned to the island airfield. The shuttle is almost completely stock, except for a few parts for the Kerbalism mod. I used some other mods (mainly Trajectories) to assist with flying, but aside from that I believe this would qualify as a stock flight per the rules.

I have completed the first mission in the Mun Series. I deployed a manned laboratory on the surface of the Mun with the Determination Space Shuttle, and after two aero-braking passes, I landed at the KSC Runway.

Here is my proof:

I have assembled a thing.  I think it qualifies for (Stock) STS-1a.

Full mission log:

Spoiler

Here is the monstrosity that I have pieced together.  Definitely based on the NASA Space Shuttle.

Trust me, it is technically a space shuttle.

Screen-Shot-2021-06-10-at-10-23-31-PM.pn

Pulling almost 3 gees on launch.   (Also pictured above if you want to see it twice)

Screen-Shot-2021-06-10-at-10-55-28-PM.pn

I have never cared about how I'm supposed to do a gravity turn.  "Stay below 300 m/s while below 10km"?  Huh?

Screen-Shot-2021-06-10-at-10-56-09-PM.pn

I like my fairings nice and toasty.  Gotta live on the edge!  I had a full four pixels left on the overheat bar...

Screen-Shot-2021-06-10-at-10-56-31-PM.pn

Well at least it's gonna clear the atmosphere (or that's what the game predicts):

Screen-Shot-2021-06-10-at-10-57-08-PM.pn

Oh right, it can't be a SSTO.  Cut the thrusters!

Screen-Shot-2021-06-10-at-10-59-11-PM.pn

...and the shuttle burned for orbit on its own engine.

Screen-Shot-2021-06-10-at-10-59-16-PM.pn

See?  Definitely 100% SSTO-free.

Screen-Shot-2021-06-10-at-11-02-21-PM.pn

Well I guess the booster is recoverable!  I better get some kind of special recognition for all the work I did trying to land it without blowing it up!  Ha!  Who needs fancy SpaceX tech when you can just ram the thing into the ground at an excess of 650 mph.

Screen-Shot-2021-06-10-at-11-03-18-PM.pn

Okay, now time for the fun part.  Bill, it's your time to shine as an engineer!  Gotta assemble the payload!

Screen-Shot-2021-06-10-at-11-03-54-PM.pn

Yeah, that's right, Bill!  Your work looks absolutely flawless!

Screen-Shot-2021-06-10-at-11-05-05-PM.pn

Bam!  Communications network complete!  The KSC now has Wi-fi!  Thank you for choosing Spectrum!

This is why people use fiber...

Screen-Shot-2021-06-10-at-11-05-24-PM.pn

Okay we had our fun.  Time to leave.

Screen-Shot-2021-06-10-at-11-06-02-PM.pn

Who needs microwaves when pouring your coffee on the window heats it up four times faster?

Screen-Shot-2021-06-10-at-11-17-36-PM.pn

Parachutes (yes I promise this is HTOL).  Gonna be a bit short of the KSC.

Screen-Shot-2021-06-10-at-11-19-40-PM.pn

See?  Told you.

Well, I was gonna try to drive over to the KSC to collect a shiny gold star, but a mountain cut me off in a lane merge.  So I guess that's it for this submission!

I am very happy that you are actively aiming to get all the badges, however as you can see you did not provide enough information for me to actually award you some of the later badges. To combat this please take more pictures on the mission-critical aspects of the missions, e.g.: orbits. I am glad that you have switched from multiple imgur links to one singular album, however i do request that you order the images in the album itself as currently they are out of order. This isn't an issue with 3 pictures but with 20 it will be. Thank you for understanding

I eagerly wait for your mission re-runs, and after that your next future missions

I do plan on reviewing everything just to see where we're at, but yeah I'll take that into consideration. In the meantime I've got more data structures, algorithms, and high level architecture to brush up on.
