Shuttle Challenge v6 - The STS thread [Stock and Mod Friendly] Now with RSS badges!

@Entropian, you are insane, I love it! Although you already seem to be seriously pushing the limit just to get to the Moon, I don't know what you're going to do for Duna and still keep stock parts.

MUN STS-2-4: Looks good! I haven't made all the RSS badges yet, so here's the standard badge for now. I'll post the new one later today when I get a chance.

For MUN STS-5-7, to be honest I don't know how to calculate what the RSS orbits vs. stock orbits should be. I would like the RSS orbits to be proportionally as difficult as the stock ones. I'll say you can use your best judgement.

Fixed it. :D  I think I'm probably going to do a 2-shuttle mission with 1 in orbit to refuel and another one that lands and docks to the orbiter one.  Probably I'll visit Phobos and Deimos to refuel as well.

For the orbit problem, I think I'll just pack a bunch of extra dV to make sure that it can go to pretty much any orbit.

Well done, @Entropian, I can't imagine trying to use stock parts in a real solar system since they're so under-powered. This challenge is super fun, so I've been cranking out missions very quickly: here's my STS-4 (commander) rescue mission. Once again, I underestimated how much deltaV I would need to change my inclination, and despite filling my shuttle to the brim with fuel, I barely managed de-orbit after completing the mission. Also, while I tried to realistically transfer the crew between shuttles by using ladders which would connect the two ships, I forgot to add RCS thrusters, so aligning the ships in order to allow for this transfer was impossible. I ended up settling on just using the kerbal's jetpacks.

@Wojjy, nice work on STS-3 and STS-4/4R. I'm excited to see what else you have come up with, Commander.

Thanks!  It's actually pretty fun once you get the hang of it.

@Entropian, I got your RSS Mun STS-2-4 badge, and the next one is ready when you complete the mission.

I'm designing the Mars mission now, and I'm wondering, can I merge Mars STS-1 2 and 3 into a single megamission?  I'm pretty sure I can complete all the Commander requirements in a single mission, plus more...

Hmm... sounds bonkers. Approved! Just remember that the shuttle from Duna Mars STS-2 and the lander from Mars STS-3 still need to land separately. Deploying the lander from the surface with the shuttle would not meet the specs for Mars STS-3; you need to demonstrate that it can land, return to orbit, and dock by itself.

I'll review your Moon mission when I get a chance. My internet connection has been flaky lately, and I can't consistently get all your images.

Great!  Also, is it fine to have the support package be an ion freighter-transfer stage?

Yes, that's fine. You might need a lot of ion engines to get a reasonable burn time though...

So I've spent the past several days designing and redesigning the mission architecture for my Mars mission.  Unfortunately, the dV requirements are so high that the only solution that won't destroy my computer is an ultra-low TWR ion freighter that basically does all the work, which, of course, takes away the real point of the Shuttle Challenge.  I've been thinking about it, and if I can do 2 or 3 support missions to construct a nuclear shuttle freighter in orbit, I may be able to complete all 3 missions in one.  I understand that for each mission I can only do 1 support launch; since I'm doing all 3 missions in one, can this requirement be waived?  I totally understand if that's not ok.  Thanks.

You can do up to 3 support launches. And maybe pray to the kraken. I hear it likes to snack on probes.
