My Relay Mysteriously Stopped Working...

Recommended Posts

I have a relay satellite orbiting Duna, which was supplying a signal to my surface base, and it suddenly lost any control.  It has electric charge and nothing appears to be wrong with any of the components.

Can anyone tell me what might be wrong?

Without a view of map mode that shows the relay and Kerbin and any relevant communication lines, my only guesses are:

  • You are too far from Kerbin
  • Something is between you and Kerbin
  • The KSC is on the other side of Kerbin and you didn't enable multiple ground stations.

Yep, obstruction is the no.1 reason why a relay wouldn't work if it's in range. I recently had such a problem myself; turns out 500 km above Kerbin is not high enough for three relays to all see each other with KSP's default celestial body occlusion multiplier.

Have you, perhaps, considered a secondary relay orbiting Ike to maintain connectivity in the event of an occlusion? I mean, the chance of both sats being eclipsed simultaneously is small if their respective orbital periods are not close multiples of each other.
