We can absolutely go past the moon in real life. We do not because of budget and safety concerns. We've sent unmanned probes everywhere in the solar system. There are sound plans to send people to mars and beyond, the primary constraint is money.

...and pointlessness. We can send a thousand rovers for the cost of one manned mission, achieving vastly greater scientific output.

The less white elephant footprints and flags daftness, the better. All that the Bush-era Mars nonsense achieved was to kill off a bunch of desperately needed climate monitoring satellite projects, along with a great deal of other genuine science.

I think we've wandered off topic. I could debate the merits of manned space exploration all day but this isn't the forum for that.(NPI)

@Surefoot: I'll need to see the output_log.txt. Did this fly in FAR previously, or only in stock aero?

Hi :) Yes this kind of design used to fly without any effort using former versions of FAR (in v0.23.x). I'm not saying this one in particular is perfect, i'd certainly need to adjust control surfaces and so on, but taking off and doing a quick subsonic jet powered flight used to be easy with such a simple and light design and 2 powerful turbojets.

Now at best i feel i have a huge ass cargo at full load barely making it after the ski jump even with flaps, slats, everything at full deflection, full thrust... Then forget about doing anything else than straight line, even a simple turn will rip everything off. Almost like i'm flying in some thick soup ...??? Also trying to just pull up the nose will bring a lot of roll in either direction, sometimes oscillating !

I never used stock aero for planes, never made any sense to me.

I reduced the mod list to: B9 (latest, goes with MM 2.3.5), FAR, KJR, pwings. Still happening, using 32 bit version. Almost all my aero surfaces are pwings, tail fins are B9 stock. Design is pretty much like F15 (for my latest test in the log below).

I was wondering if anyone knows anything about atmosphere and velocity curves in CFG files. I was a big fan of the KAX radial and turboprop engines in stock form, but with FAR, they'll easily propel ships past the speed of sound. I tried cutting the max thrust value in half, and while it helped a bit as far as max speed, it had the unfortunate effect of causing them to accelerate like dogs.

So looking at the turboprop CFG file, I see the following:

@mossman: Oh, why didn't you say it was for intakes only? That's on purpose, because those numbers go into the stock drag model.

It's not for intakes only. I just happened to pick that part to demonstrate. Whenever this issue is in effect, all parts show 0 drag and I'm able to go noticeably faster in-atmo.

On that note, I've noticed that most structural parts no longer have the drag+lift counter on their context menu. How do I get those back?

@brusura: Known issue with pWings and a fix to some issues with odd CoL with B9 parts. A fix is in the works, but until then, please use GitHub to report dev issues instead of here.

@Surefoot: If the last time you flew it was in 0.23, then it's quite possible that improvements to the flight model have caused this and that it is proper. Look into shifting your CoM and making sure that your wing loading isn't ridiculously high.

@Voculus: Well, for one, 350 m/s is ~ Mach 1, and having thrust increase there will ensure that it can reach stupidly high speeds. You'd want thrust to fall off by that point. Ideally, you would abandon stock-based airbreathing models since they're complete garbage and wrong, because jets and props do not act like rocket engines.

@mossman: Why would any other parts show a drag of 0? Only intakes have the maximum_drag indicator displayed, so I don't know how you're reading it from anything else. Even still, those numbers must be set to 0 unless you want drag proportional to mass.

FAR's indicators can be re-enabled in its debug menu in the Space Center, and the numbers that come from those will not be 0.

You are not suffering any issues, everything is working perfectly fine.

No, no, no...

If memory and deduction serve, Thrust is at 100% (1.0 multiplier) at 0m/s, goes to 120% (1.2) at 350m/s, and finally gets to 0% at 1000m/s. The trailing 0's are the in-slope and out-slope of the curves.

Of course, I could be insanely wrong... ;)

- my previous attemps were doomed by the "noodle syndrome": seems KJR doesnt attach pwings or fuselage parts as strongly as before. My plane was flexing so much any aerodynamic input was offset by the flexing. Seems v0.24.x is much more noodly than before.

- also i got blind sided by that new universal fuel tank part thing: turns out my COM was completely offset

- Delta wings arent protecting from mach tuck anymore, oh no they arent. Found out my delta design is getting max roll + max yaw during transsonic. Also falls like a brick once supersonic..

- My best high speed supersonic design was above screenshot, although i found out it behaves at subsonic quite well.

- Mach tuck is constant, huge, very difficult to mitigate, my above design dips a few times before getting enough speed to climb at 20K where it gets to speeds where lift is secondary, and STILL i have like 80% pitch trim upwards !?!? (even at mach 3+) I suppose i'd have to add some proper camber to wings but that's very difficult to achieve in KSP (especially now that things are a bit more noodly than before)

- Or is it something else ? Like small parts are accounted for or something ? Or do i need to add drag to the underside to balance drag produced by tails ? Wouldnt tails produce a moment that keeps the nose up ?

(edit) and regular turbojets are so weak now.. on SABRE's i just switch to rocket mode for takeoff or it takes forever and half. On normal turbojets even a very lightweight, simple design (like 30 parts total) behaves like a tanker, i'll try more designs these days but maybe these jets have been nerfed a bit too much ?

(edit2) and thinking of mach tuck, at around mach 2 on the above design i get a slight temporary wobble, like something going through a turbulence, then i get lift again.

@Surefoot: If you've got pitch-down tendencies at Mach 2, that's not Mach tuck; Mach tuck is specific to the transonic regime. What you've got going on is a design that is too stable at supersonic speeds because the CoL is too far behind the CoM; you will need to reduce the distance between them in order to compensate. Unless it's getting stupid pitch-down tendencies only around Mach 0.7 - 1.1, you're not getting Mach tuck.

Also, nerfs to the jet engines still leave them with higher thrust and lower fuel consumption than real life ones at altitude. Trust me, they haven't been nerfed enough, but people still complain.

Finally, KJR has never done anything wrt pWings, because trying to get the sizing of those parts is impossible, and allowing KJR to do anything to them simply makes it worse. You are seeing the effects of stock joint forces there.

@Camacha: Consider that Surefoot's flexing problems are due to the stock fixes, and then come to your own conclusions.

I forgot the exact fix for that one.

Try replacing your tail fin by the Standard Canard.

Or mess with elevators inclination a bit (I guess a 5 deg dihedral fixes it, but not sure).

Or don't dare going into a sideslip.

Will reproduce your design and tell what fixes that just because.

It was designed as a trainer; swap the standard jet for a turbo if you want to turn it into a hypersonic aerobatics specialist instead.

Yes, dihedral on the elevators fixed it.

I also made minor changes to it.

The fuel was unbalanced, COM would go behind COL after the first tank was empty.

Since KSP jet engines are insanely efficient, you won't need more than one tank for a plane that small.

Now, surprisingly, the COM won't even move doesn't matter how much fuel you have, nice balance there!

Also changed control surfaces deflection a bit, to make it more reliable.

@Ferram: ah, thanks a bunch that makes sense. That's a significant change from former versions ! I am open to that new challenge. More fuel transfers while airborne will be needed... Nice that we have that Goodspeed pump mod :)

For me the jet nerf just makes me take longer to achieve the same results, i understand the need of some for utter realism, but that's feeling artificial to me. It's still a space program for small green men, let's still have some fun, that's my take on it. If i want to play a flight sim there's DCS or X-Plane and Kerbal is nowhere near those (even with your wonderful mod).

It was posted lots of times here that it was a nerf much needed and that you can change it by yourself.

You can find the configuration you need to change a few pages back.

It's one single value that affects all engines.

Thanks. I'm looking forwards to giving it a shot at the Vomit Comet Challenge.

I'd been using Goodspeed to balance the tanks, and I did manage to run them nearly dry (with the turbojet version); doing several Fine Print aerial survey contracts in a single flight puts a lot of air miles on. My more serious planes normally have lines arranged to drain the fuel from the rear lateral tanks first.
