Switching from standalone to steam

Hello! I dont know if this is the right forum but im gonna ask this anyways. Is there a possibility to switch from the standalone game to the steam version? i have had trouble with updating the game and heard that the steam version updates automatically. If there is a way to switch to the steam version please tell me!

Not without buying the game again through Steam. Somehow I doubt going to Steam and saying 'I bought this game somewhere else but it isn't working right, can you give it to me for free?' will work.

If you do buy the game from Steam though, and are on the current version (and put all your mods there or don't use mods), then copying your save is super easy. Just copy the entire folder of your save and paste it into the same folder in your Steam install.

Actually, it does.    I don't know if the offer is still valid, but at one point if you bought the game through the KSP store, you could transfer it to steam free of charge.  I don't know if the offer still stands (it was quite a while ago), or if it was restricted to players who bought the game before a certain date, but last time I checked (within the last year), I have the option to transfer my game over.

Edit:   After conferring with some colleagues, the Offer was only good for people who bought the game prior to a date in 2013.  We're working on finding the official memo to this, but if you bought the game after that date, you won't be able to switch it over. 

 

Edit 2:   After some digging, my crack team of researchers (excellent work @James Kerman!) has come up with these official words:

So the answer is, yes, you can transfer your KSP store version of KSP to Steam, but only if you purchased it prior to March 20, 2013.  Otherwise, you're out of luck.

It's fairly frequently on sale at 75% off, so re-buying it wouldn't be too bad if you waited for one of those sales.
