How do sentinels scan?

Question

Do they scan in a sphere around where its orbit is or just a small plane where it orbits?

See here

https://wiki.kerbalspaceprogram.com/wiki/SENTINEL_Infrared_Telescope#:~:text=When activated%2C it will scan,to the Sun) than Kerbin.

and here

The search engine of your choice will help ;)

Basically, a Sentinel will scan for objects in the next outer orbit. Hope this does make sense.

When activated the tote scope will just look for astroid near planets. From there you can track asteroids as “Unkown Objects” and see if they hit kerbin.

By the way, it takes a loooong time. So do some missions inbetween and eventually you will see "1 of X objects tracked"

You need sentinels to orbit between Eve and Kerbin or Duna and Kerbin, depending on the contract. Just launch and leave it be. Often contracts don't require new sentinels to be launched so if you have one with plenty of delta v, you can fulfill many contracts in the future with the same vessel.
