The Chinese Lunar Exploration Program is now constructing Chang'e 6 and Chang'e 7.

  • Chang'e 6 is a copy of Chang'e 5 (expected to be launched in 2023), but on near side of the Moon.
  • Chang'e 7 will deploy a Lunar Rover and a mini-flying probe (expected to be launched in 2023/2024), target is the lunar south pole (looking for water)
  • Chang'e 8 will be like Chang'e 7 but will carry a 3D printing experiment that will serve as a Closed Biological EcoSystem Experiment

After this phase The Chinese Lunar Exploration Program  will construct the 1st Lunar Science Base.

I mean, Chang'e 5 is also on the near side ? It's out on the limb, yeah...

Good job though. I thought the landing was for later tonight but I guess I missed this one (should be early Dec 17 not late Dec 17). Maybe if someone archived the livestream...

(Maybe, politics, but I just bring the link)

So, the most experienced and competent lunar sample tester is out of the game, and can't check&confirm that the sample is from the Moon. Nice.

It's US that decided not to coop with CNSA.

Official confirmed total 1731g lunal samples collected. Personally I think the density of the lunar sample there maybe lower than expected.

Pretty good haul I suppose, though I do wonder if the landing process itself did fluff things up, I mean we're just taking the loose regolith right ?

And I'm not going to comment anything on the tensions, other than to say that it's very appalling and I hope they mend things up.

in the latest interview with Hu Hao, Chief Designer of CLEP Phase 3 Mission, Hu said the drills on CE-5 lander blocked by multiple rock layers so it only drilled less than 1m (2m expected), which result in the loss of sample.

About the orbitor, Hu said the orbitor saved 200kg of fuel in the whole mission, now they planned to visit L1 point of Earth-moon system first.

CLEP announced the extended mission for CE-5 orbitor: Long-term Sun-Earth L1 point orbiting exploration mission, including trans S-E L1 point orbit and S-E L1 point orbiting orbit design and control, analysis the illumination and radioactive environments at S-E L1 point, performing communication test when solar transit of orbitor occurred. More future mission will be planned depends on the orbitor and other conditions
