jimmymcgoochie
I think you just click and hold LMB and drag it around to point a Kerbal in that direction. There's also a keybind to get them to rotate to face forwards relative to the camera position, you can change it in the settings (I did, it was bound to left control which is also my go-down button, so I switched to right control instead). MacLuky
1966 Part 1 The production lines are getting up to speed and we are looking at a lot of launches. Some probes arrive at their destination. We build our first small space station and many things go wrong with the new Vega class crew vehicle. Spoiler We have our first Mercury flyby. The DV for capture would be incredible so we adjust our orbit for a low altitude swoop That is some sight, lots of craters Swinging to the dark side, disabling comms and avionics to feed the instruments with the last bit of juice And recover and start transmitting. In 3 years there is opportunity for another pass. The nodes have been set up and the craft is powered down. Same procedure at vesta. Here it would have taken 5k to orbit. We might be able to do that with a lighter probe It gets small really fast By by. No 4 is disabled, no meaning-full encounters planned Next up is Venus. I'll spare you the craft, but it released an atmospheric probe It will be a flyby mission. The DV is too much. I will need to plan better This is not a good idea, but hey its science And vapourized Our new launcher is ready. Vega 1 is 3 person craft weighting over 15 tons. It launches on a Taurus-0B with a cryo upper stage. Same 9 H1 engines on the first stage as the Taurus-0A. So very reliable Dumping a ton of escape tower Next up are 9 RL-10 engines. Expensive but great ISP On top is the full stack of the Vega, packing 14 days of supplies and 2k dv Release in a 350-450km orbit at 28 deg Circularize and then boost to 12Mm. Service module RCS is not working but we can compensate De-orbit should approximate Lunar speeds The whole thing comes apart We have good deployment and it survived the heat Success. With all components tested we can move to the next phase of manned tests and final designs Eva Larsen (P), Valentina Yankovskaya (S), Alexander Hoffmann (E) go for a 4 day capsule test. Since the weight is less we can use a cheaper booster and more reliable. On paper! First a booster fails just before MECO, but second stage should be able to cope. Then third stage refuses to light and service module engine does neither. Preparing for a hot re-entry Internal images before they hit 13G and faint. They survive though! The final Rigel is rolled out Liam O'Brian (P), Francesco Verne (E) will spend 4d running experiments but since the Vega program is running behind on both capsule and booster, the boys at the Rigel team are proposing a block B. Testing more manouvering The view is amazing this time no fireworks, smooth reentry. Though I cant decide wether 60 or 70 km is better. Rainforest? did you bring the mosquito repellent? Right on schedule Capella 1 launches on a Taurus-0B. Clocking in at 12t It is heading for a 300km orbit the 0B is overpowered but the 0A would be underpowered. Turns out it is a good thing. One of the RL-10 engines explodes but we still make orbit with 1000m/s to spare Deployed and aligned with the sun. It has 30 days of supplies. But with Vega delayed, no crew A mission to Saturn with better RTG, Comms and TSI stage Heavier too but the Taurus-0A can manage I love that engine plume Here we go. It will take some time to get there. Ann Johansson (S), Elene Eikina (P) launch a Block B Rigel. Basically a scaled DOWN version. It has less fuel, only 4d of life support and is meant as an orbital taxi. It is also lighter, which means there is room for a mission payload. Which is shown here. It is a docking adaptor for Rigel to Vega standard but it also contains additional supplies for 30 days. We got this Rendez-vous thing down and will dock Ironically you can reach the supplies from the station, but the astronauts have to EVA over since Rigel has no crew tube We can make this work. As a bonus we can now shutdown the avionics on Rigel saving on power Vessel Naming is a mess Vega 3 is the first production configuration. It launches 2 weeks later On board are Eva Larsen (P), Valentina Yankovskaya (S), Alexander Hoffmann (E) and we are using a Vega Block A with a smaller service module. It can launch on a Taurus-0A which is good New engine design. The core can last for 4d, but it is now carrying an additional 26 days in the mission module on top. It will be a short mission but we will make a house call. Parking orbit was 150km catch up with Capella after 2d. We lost an antenna on the cargo module. Going for dock Mission specialist Alexander Hoffmann goes on EVA And installs a new instrument that will need some more CFG file hacking to actually work They then leave the mission module attached and return to Earth Re-entry at 70km Look at that interior Very smooth (but long) re-entry Safely back. This could become our new LEO spacecraft Having completed their 30d at the station the crew of Rigel 11 returns. Another Rigel Block B is already completed. It will leave no debris. At 29000 funds it is not that expensive to get 2 astronauts to the station And we are back Edited March 1, 2021 by MacLuky
MacLuky
1966 Part 2 There was a lot of activity on the second half of the year. The number of launches in the second half almost doubled that of the first half! we get Kerbals back to the moon and we see two new lifters! Spoiler The second mission to Capella takes off with Liam O'Brian (P), Francesco Verne (E) Docking with the mission module Powering up the system and running some new experiments for 60 days! We return home and take some instruments with us since they draw power Luna 23 is a new rover design for Mars but we test it nearby It has much better power management but is quite heavy It consists of a landing platform that will turn into a relay post with a high gain antenna. TWR is low but lots of delta-v Testing the new airbag landing system. The rover descends, very wobbly Its also grabbing surface samples, though we not yet have a way to send them back The rover visits 3 biomes due to a great landing spot, grabbing more science than both other rover landings combined. Canopius 10 heads for Ceres It is too early and will wait for 58 days Vega 4 is crewed by Cloe Frimaut (P), Valentina Yankovskaya (S), Alexander Hoffmann (E) They do a shakedown of the Vega Block B that has more room They will spent 10 days to test all the systems It was launched on a Taurus-0A because it was only partly fueled. The test went well. Block B is cleared for lunar missions Mars window opened up, the rover is ready Basically the same as Luna 23 but now with a orbital insertion module that can act as a relay. Repurposing Legir 5. Planned for the moon, but should have enough juice for this. The launcher is a Taurus-1B powered by 5 E1 engines on the first stage and 8 RL10 engines on the second stage can push 20 tons to LEO Docking with Mars 1 En-route Vega 5 launches Leia Kuipers (S), Judith Pesquet (S), Liam C. Clarke (P) to Capella 1 making it the fourth visit to the station Mission is at least 60 days but we are hoping to get more supplies Jupiter... and many moons. For some reason our orbit jumped after we entered soi So we miss europa now ;-( we go for a very eccentric orbit and hope for another encounter Capella 2 is based on the Vega But the crew section has been replaced with cargo containers The service module is a copy of Vega and completely overpowered It carries 6 months of supply But now power is very close to becoming a problem In the last days of December Vega 6 launches for a 400km 28deg orbit After the dress rehearsal with Vega 4 Cloe Frimaut (P), Valentina Yankovskaya (S), Alexander Hoffmann (E) are now launching on a Taurus-1A that can push the full 15 ton to LEO Followed by Legir 6 again on a 1B They meet up And we have delta-v to spare Look at that beautyshot Vega 6 will need to do its own capture burn, again orbits change after entering SOI 2 days are spent in orbit to observe our celestial neighbour up close Then we return to a 60km pe Which is really hot for the service module We burn through all of the ablator, again... but survive. I did not like that temperature build up. We will need better heat shields. Edited March 5, 2021 by MacLuky
MacLuky
The whole docking process is very time consuming. We are looking at 2 launches to get the crew to the moon and 2 for the lander, perhaps 3. I think I will look for a new launcher that can sling 15 ton to the moon
jimmymcgoochie
You should consider replacing that cluster of RL-10s with a single J-2, it’s much more powerful, lighter and would be considerably cheaper too.
MacLuky
Yes, we just unlocked it, stay tuned ;-) 1967 Part 1 The first half of the year saw fewer launches. The crew is training and the launchers are getting more expensive. We do see two new lifters in the Taurus family and two polished ones in the Aries. Spoiler Canopius 5 makes a swing by Europa and grabs some science, it is also slowing down and adjusting its inclination. For 154 m/s we'll get level with io. Meanwhile the crew of Vega 5 is putting a strain on the power systems, they are using the fuel cells to stretch their stay. Leia Kuipers (S), Judith Pesquet (S), Liam C. Clarke (P) have already spent more than 90 days in orbit and are getting quite stressed. Rigel 13 launches with a solution for both problems As always a very reliable trajectory Ann Johansson (S), Elene Eikina (P) bring a new power module Almost forget to dock, after an accidental burn The ballet begins. Capella 2 needs to go to the other dock and Vega 5 heads home Checking panel alignment Good dock. A small structural tube will allow crew to traverse in the future. For now the crew has to Eva over About 2 months later the relieve crew launches on Vega 7 Freeing up the docking port On approach. Cloe Frimaut (P), Valentina Yankovskaya (S), Alexander Hoffmann (E) bring many new instruments and a planned stay of 80 days Taking the trash home A safe return for the last of the rigels (for now) Launches on a new rocket. The Taurus-0C especially designed to prevent all the hassle with Legir The first stage is powered by 8 E1 engines, the second runs on the newly unlocked J2 and 3 of them The last bit is a single J2 that puts 15 tons in a 400km 28deg orbit with 4000 m/s to spare It was perfectly timed for another burn Lit up again it burns for the moon And puts the craft in a 34km orbit before using the RCS to deorbit Altair is a prototype lander powered by an AJ10 mid Which explodes after 5 minutes, 2 minutes too soon A drastic attempt is made with the upper stage, only to discover it has a TWR of 0.68 This is why we run tests (but a sim is cheaper) Venus 1 is launched on a polished Aries-2D. It can probably lift 5t now Using a cryo insertion stage Let's hope this works Another old launcher, on the 60t pad is Speculum 8 with 2 satellites in the fairing This time we are confident that power will not be an issue Mars 3 arrives and gets into orbit The burn takes forever, then it drops the Pe and disconnects the payload Before getting back into an orbit Here it will serve as relay Meanwhile the probe descends without much flaming Ejecting the shell Deploying parachutes And landing system Landing on airbags. The rover is a copy of Luna 23 However, since 1 wheel on Luna 23 broke, had engineers tied the craft down with struts, now blocking the wheels So it cant move The surface relay runs out of power so we must wait for the orbiter to come arround Fortunately that one can relay our data, we just cant rove anywhere. Capella 3 launches on a 1B, which needs an upgrade to the J2 engine I know. I like to use my lifters several times, but the Taurus family is destined to grow into a Saturn 5 type of lifter at some point Good lift of the payload in a 450km 28d orbit Old school TLI almost gets us to the moon Just that last 100 m/s Capture and circularisation at 40km Capella 3 will be a small outpost for orbital observation and can dock with landers too. It is designed as a lifeboat if something goes wrong, we have 60 days to come up with a solution. Vega 8 on another Taurus-0C this is quite early but we are confident. On board are Eva Larsen (P), Judith Pesquet (S), Liam C. Clarke (P) good for a total of 12 missions. They are very experienced (okay Eva did half of those missions, but still) Second stage comfortably lifts the craft to orbit. I like the J2. 300m/s left TLI The crew is excited Capture using the OMS A bit of rendez vous from 750 to 40 km Dock! they will spend 12 days in orbit before returning The station is providing ample power Meanwhile the crew of Vega 7 returns. So that they can prepare for their moon trip. That is if we get the rocket built in time Eva is enjoying herself. MacLuky
This is what the current family of lifters looks like, I am working on a low cost below the Taurus 1A. Cost means it takes a long time to build, so lower cost is good Also dancing around the max capacity of the platforms

We are also starting to train crew for a new capsule, but it will take them 300 days in class... Spoiler After 12 days in orbit of the Moon, the crew of Vega 8 returns. Leaving the crew module at the station to gradually build out the living space. The craft was designed for 4 days of autonomous operation. When plotting the return a "normal" return would take 5 days. Also Li reserves are low, we do have plenty of fuel though. We decide to burn 1300 of the 1500dv and get home in 3 days. We do need to slow down though, food is already gone, O2 is very low, scrubbers have 30 minutes left No more fuel means we use the last for spin stabilised reentry and hope for the best One parachute burns off, but the other one is okay. Let's tweak the numbers on this craft before we launch it again. Vega 9 is still using a block A configuration and heading to Capella. Making it the 7th mission to the station in two years For some reason the pannels are now obscured by Vega, fortunately we have an engineer Slight pannel rearrangement For some reason the orbit changed, and we get to the craft as it entered the atmosphere. We are not sure why this happend but we blame SmartASS Emergency reentry, in the distance we see the station blow up More fireworks, we did transfer the data. But the loss of the station is depressing, we had expansions planned for the 180 day record A jupiter probe on a Taurus-1A We've seen these many time. I should design a new set of TxI stages Something around payload mass/dv. This is underpowered but requires no tooling Last 130 m/s we can spare. Orbit looks good, we should get in a level plane this time Venus 1 arrives, skims the atmo at 120km fine, but at 110 everything explodes, it did get in orbit and sent new images. Design on a new lander will start soon, hopefully before those contracts run out. The backup for Canopius 11 was number 12. Designed for Jupiter but with a few tweaks in the antenna it can reach Uranus. And we think that after a gravity assist from Uranus, we might get to Neptune. The antennas have not been designed for it though. We may need a deep space relay. In december the new module for our orbital lab is complete, Capella 4 launches on an Taurus-1B and is put in a 400km orbit It has advanced solar panes that can track the sun (oh joy!) This will save us so much pain. It is a pity that Capella 1 is gone, it was supposed to dock to that to increase living space We also have a supply ship in storage that we can now send up It will provide 6 months of supply. The crew of Vega 10 launch with block 1A of the Vega craft. Tuned down to 3 days of life support and some new tech it is made as cheap as possible The launcher is a new Taurus-0L. Powered by 3 H1 engines in the first stage and 4 X405 in the second. This allows it to lift 5 tons to LEO and lower the cost of crewed launches to the station by 30% We had a misfire but corrected it Its also the first craft not to use fuel cells for manned craft Rendezvous is getting easier But docking is not! the craft has no attitude control thrusters, only roll. In a desperate attempt the ground crew reactivates the avionics on the station and uses that to dock with the spacecraft Obviously there are fixes to be made, but for the next 180 days Capella 4 has a crew and they can do actually science in an actual lab. If our comm sat network was working better, they would also have a call home. Oh and disabling pressure control until we have a crew is a dumb idea, we lost all our nitrogen reserves trying to represurize and are using O2 now to presurize the lab Edited March 14, 2021 by MacLuky
MacLuky
1968 First Quarter I noticed there were already a lot of screen shots and since some of them were really exciting I decided to do an early report: Spoiler Early days of January Cloe Frimaut (P), Valentina Yankovskaya (S), Alexander Hoffmann (E) start on their epic moon Journey. Their Vega has a better arrangement of consumables allowing for a longer time in space in the event of the separation of the mission module. The trusted 0C brings them on a TLI before crashing into the moon And the service module does a nice capture at 75x35 km before rendez vous I love mechjeb for plotting nodes, but docking I like to do myself, it just wastes so much fuel. Cloe Frimaut (P), Valentina Yankovskaya (S), Alexander Hoffmann (E) start their 30 days in orbit of the moon mission and bring a lot of new equipment Meanwhile Canopius 5B has a Ganymede flyby that will drop their ap even further and get us closer to io, first we load up a ton of science Alexander goes EVA to transfer equipement This stuff's gotta go The additional space is very welcome, each can have private sleeping quarters not needing to hear the others snore. But after 30 days it is time to head home Leaving another living space module. This time they have enough capacity to get home And yes we have the io encounter, we ran out of fuel but io will bump our inclination hopefully enough so we can run the orbital perbutation experiment for the next 9 years. Unless an encouter will change our course Wallpaper shot Mid course change, we are coming in too hot Pulling too many G here! all crew passed out, but survived Capella 6 was the backup for Capella 4, but since that was a success we can expand the station Those RL10's should be capable enough I see you! lets slow down. It is really hard to get a good alignment Closing on RCS, we have enough Another docking Closing in Fiddling with those Mole ports Contact, that is one fine station With plenty of room and power Altair 2 is the second test of the lander Good departure, but low on dv, we will need to capture on RCS too We also have a mercury window and an oppertunity to test our moon rocket again over 6000 dv to Mercury Last 100 from the capture stage Altair begins landing sequence from 400x40km it descends at pe angling 5deg above the horizon due to low TWR One single burn, this is new This engine can handle it and it can throttle Getting close Touchdown 7m/s left After 1 day we depart This was a struggle to get right TWR is just too low we keep fighting gravity Orbit 30x84km with 34 m/s left After some tests the craft is crashed into the surface Small correction burn. In 100 days we attempt a capture at Mercury Edited March 17, 2021 by MacLuky

MacLuky
1968 second quarter The time has come that we can try for that most important of mission, perhaps not with that hardware we wanted, but it can be done and we will do so. Spoiler The crew of Vega 10 have spent 180 days in space. It's time to go home. Accidentally this disables the pressure regulators on the station which will lead to problems and massive resource loss later on. All systems work perfectly. Starting descent The backup from the Mercury mission is retasked to to Saturn. Lose thrust on one J2 make orbit anyway. Perfect departure, it will arrive in 6 years. The next one goes to Vesta It will try to capture using the solid boosters. Next crew for the station, another Taurus-0L launch Good dock, Leia signed up for 1 year in space. Launched in 1965, but still very much alive. For 154 m/s we get another pass at Mercury But Canopius 13 gets there first Firing up those boosters And the final stage Capture! highly eliptical It will take several sweeps to get all the data Capella 7 brings new supplies on a Taurus-0L. Less supply but cheaper to launch and can launch on a Taurus-0L Approach And dock. See the size difference between the old and new. End of July Altair leaves to for the Moon After a 200km insert it leaves for the moon It barely makes orbit at 30km due to RCS in the transfer stage. But it made orbit! batteries are locked and the system is put in sleep mode. Eva Larsen (P), Elene Eikina (P), Ann Johansson (S) head out on Vega 13 The J2 lights again. After a good insert at 100km it quickly catches up with the lander This is why we trained this at the station people Dock! Eva and Ann transfer to the lander and since it is drawing resources we quickly disconnect Light up the engine and keep it burning We slam into the moon at 18 m/s and lose the engine with still 100 m/s left but we landed! Eva and Ann are the first to walk on the moon Eva plants a flag Inspection of the lost engine Ann heads out to the lockers She places a monument for Stephan Adams on the moon They will make 2 EVA's for a total of 2 hours collecting samples Take off just before the orbiter will reach us, we are at inc. 0.45 deg relative inclination Picking up speed We get good traction Rendez vous for 4 m/s Hello there Docking this thing is a dream After transfer we undock the lander and leave it to crash Then we burn for home. Plenty of resources left Stretching the legs Pe at 65km One parachute burned off Safely back. For some reason the samples are lost? we did transfer them to the capsule but its not there anymore. I guess that means we need to go back Edited March 19, 2021 by MacLuky
MacLuky
1968 second half Spoiler Capella 8 is another resupply for the station. This will bring up the nitrogen for at least a year This will relieve the strain on the O2 pressure And another resupply mission this will bring the total supplies to a year On approach Capella 5 is empty can now burn up We upgrade the comm network to level 7 Commsat 8 is being replaced by commsat 10 Relays are put in geostationary orbit Final one Next up a new spacecraft for deep space, two crews are already training for it Orbital manœuvres testing. We should have 50 ignitions And 2500 m/s will bring the craft quite the manauverabilty around the moon Checking the docking procedure. It is a heavy craft to navigate \ Dock achieved. Valerie has fallen ill and it is decided that she will come back with the Polaris Re-entry at 65km the craft has reduced ablator Valerie loves the new internal view. Life support systems are excellent. There is a little worry about the orientation to the sun Disconnect the service module Great reentry, gently on the G's Meanwhile Canopius 10 swings by Ceres Brings a trove of science after 2 years of travels A capture is not possible but at 1500 m/s we'll swing by Vesta in 2 years! A capture would have taken 7k A new rover for our sister planet. Let's hope this one survives.. The only 1A of the year A small TVI stage, they will need to use a bit of the capture stage. But we get good departure. Edited March 21, 2021 by MacLuky
MacLuky
1969 first half The first half of 1969 is marked by new launcher development. This has slowed production considerably and we will need another few moon landings to have the funds to speed up again. Science is increasing due to some great missions this year. Following the moon landing the head of the space agency announces an ambition to put boots on mars within the decade. Spoiler A second flyby of Mercury yields a bit more science but not much. We do learn more about gravity assists and deep space manoeuvring. Mission has been more than successful. Second test of Polaris. Liam O'Brian (P), Francesco Verne (E), Judith Pesquet (S) launch in lunar orbit and spend 10 days to test the systems and try the engines for a high speed rentry First launch of a 1B this year. This launcher could do with an upgrade Vega is fuel cell powered, but Polaris uses the sun New engine Crossing the radiation belts Space is an improvement for quality of life Re-entry at 9km/s easy, hardly burn any ablator New attempt at a mars rover on a 0C Two were built, both depart succesfully A similar rover arrives at Venus One part is the relay station that will be put in low Venus orbit After the rentry burn, the orbiter flips and raises orbit The rover will use RCS to tweak the descent Pe dropped from 125 to 120 after 4 passes. using the RCS, this is it! Descent takes very long, we lost 1 solar panel due to heating One chute explodes, the second one is okay The RTG overheats on the landing station, the rover quickly leaves the platform, after that the platform explodes The rover gets hot, but not too hot Grabbing samples, but relay is not possible due to alignment and landing site. The craft connects to the orbiter but only when it is in the radio shadow. In 90 days we hope to regain contact and finally get the science. Capella 10 is the first launch of a Taurus-0D. This power house has 5 F1 engines on the first stage. And 5 J2 engines on the second, this can push 120t to LEO Final stage is the same as the 0C, carrying a J2. It can push 45t to TLI. The current payload is a Capella block B space-station. The electronics have been upgraded so it will also do the capture burn at the moon since the station weights only 16t Approaching Capella 3 Dock is complete. The stack is designed to facilitate in orbit research and supply. It also has a male docking port for a future reusable lander. Capella 3 is almost the same size as Capella 4 now but supply runs low We have 89 days of N2, we will need a resupply soon Edited March 25, 2021 by MacLuky

MacLuky
RP1 patch of the day I love RP1 but the second half of the tech tree is really empty. There is some mod support but not easy to find. I find myself creating RO and RP1 configs for various mods that may help other players, thus I'll post some of these patches here in the hope that they may help someone. MacLuky
Patch of the day AlternateApollo is a great mod, but not all is supported in RP1. Here is a better Skylab if you are running Kerbalism it will give you some comfort which seems fair since it is a lot bigger than a hitchhiker, surely there is a tredmill. MacLuky
1969 Second Half new infrastructure and a cool new landing Spoiler Vega 14 heads to the moon ahead of the new moon landing to prep the station Still a slow capture burn En route to the new lab with more instruments Inspection of the station prior to docking This looks awesome! The organically grown Capella 3 has become a really sizable station Installation of the new O2 pressure regulator Beauty shot The first lunar resupply is sent out with a lot of N2 Almost the same design as for LEO Good insert Precision docking through the solar array Next up is Polaris 3 to the moon! Good launch. The Taurus 0D has had a couple of launches now and is basically a beefed up 0C that has flown 14 times now But we carry our own TLI stage And we use solar now. No more power problems The new lander is smaller and lighter Using the service engine to capture Descent stage is the same Burning the whole way down. We need to hit the right biome this time Touchdown, lost the engine again! Lots of samples to be collected And a flag of course They set up some reflectors and will spend a day Observations from Capella 3 that is in their path Back home a crew is tired and will be rotated out Good return One day later it is time to go Good seperation though the gimbal fights Locking gimbal, using RCS for control we get a nice orbit, and close to the station Rendez vous and sample delivery Alexander joins them The lander can be discarded The crew returns on the vega but Chris stays behind to work with the other team to analyse the samples, most of the crew got hit pretty hard by a solar storm Breaking orbit 30 days later the others must leave too. There is still a lot of science to be done. We'll be back Safe returns after a skip Finally we arrive at Vesta and enter orbit. We need the TWR of the solids to slow down fast And another long burn Orbit achieved Capella 12 is designed to prevent the radiation problem It is a mostly empty supply craft that has been outfitted with a shield TLI And deployement. This should work in theory Capture. We bring some more N2 as well Fiddly dock, but we can now turn our tail to the sun Vega 15 ferries Valerie up for a 3 year mission in preparation for mars. Wil it drive her crazy? Dock achieved. Plenty of supply left But you can always do with more Next up is a lander and orbiter for Jupiters moon(s) We hope europa Familiar launcher New design with a lot of power Another crew rotate, we need the team back.
