help attaching struts in orbit

Recommended Posts

Help a brother out guys, I'm going out my mind. For the life of me i cant figure out how to add additional struts to a ship in orbit. I have KIS installed, I have KAS installed, and i have some EAS-4 struts in a craft inventory that I want to take out and add to the ship. I cant transfer to a Kerbal, they just wont transfer to their inventory. how on earth is this done please?

Is the craft inventory the "new" stock inventory? You can't directly move items from stock inventory to a kerbal's KIS inventory, and a kerbal's stock inventory is usually taken up with a jet-pack and a parachute

I remember being able to attach  struts using KIS prior to the upgrade that included inventory, but I've had no success with it since that time. Now I can attach the strut, but am unable to extend it to where I want it to go.

There is a DMagic's Modlet called EVA Struts that can be deployed while on EVA that may be useful to you. Again I have not used it since the inventory upgrade.

Or try the brilliant Quantum Struts which can be attached using KAS (not tested this since 1.8 though tbh) but you can toggle them on and off so can place them in editor and turn on when you need them. They kind of auto attach to the other part as a result of the beam of light they produce touching it.

Yeah the issue is also, in order to add a strut to a kerbals stock inventory, you have to remove both the parachute and the EVA jetpack as otherwise it won't let you transfer as the inventory volume is too much. But then without the EVA pack, how can you maneuver around a ship. But even then, when it's in the inventory, I have no idea how you actually use the strut and place it on a part.

For stock inventory it can only be performed by an Engineer. You have to enter EVA Construction mode (use the Crane hook icon on the toolbar or I believe the i key while on EVA.) The engineer can then grab things from stock inventory locations that are close by and attach them to the ship as if you where inside the VAB.

Pilots and scientists need not apply.

This person is asking about the mod rather than the construction interface. (I believe.) Maybe ask in that mod's thread?

Not necessarily the mod, I'd be happy being able to place the struts using the stock inventory, I just have no idea how to do it.

Thanks I'll give it a try
