Scott Manley does this in one of his videos:

Basically, you will have to get rid of most of the lateral movement before entering the atmosphere. Make sure that you do not fall too fast once you are in the atmosphere as you will have a decreasing amount of thrust to correct it with since it gets hotter closer to the ground which increases the risk of overheating.
