Building outside the VAB?

Question

I created an interstellar mod (don't ask me for it, it's still in its dev stage!!!), and need to launch several 2000+ ton starships into low Kerbin orbit for orbital assembly. Each starship covers at least half of the VAB's height, leaving almost no room for the launcher. Is there a way to build outside of the VAB in stock KSP, or do I need a mod to do this?

You can build them in chunks and assemble them in orbit.  You might try the aircraft hanger, but you can't assemble things in the parking lot as far as I know.

You can move the ship around in the VAB, so you can center the bit you're working in and exclude the rest.

I've been doing it for several 7000-ton ships, and i know for a fact someone built a bridge over the dres canyon with a ship 4 km long

As far I know, the game will not mind if attach a subassemble that will mostly fall outside the VAB. In that case, working in chunks is the way to do it in Stock.

But You really want Hangar Extender if building giant huge spacecraft will be  a common occurrence.

Is that what happens, when modern browsers tell new users, that the "http(s)://" part needs to be hidden/excluded? :D

Ya, it's definitely dead, the forum thread doesn't even exist anymore :P

But it has a continued thread and download, which I posted on this page :)
