Stock (with DLC) yoyo-despin methods?

I'm trying to create a spin-stabilized kick stage in KSP. I've got the spin-up sequence (easy, just put sepratrons at the center of mass) done, but want to perform a spin down by doing a yoyo-despin. Is there any compact way to do this without mods? I have both DLC's.

This technically works, but now I have these weird "sticks" that protrude up/down from the kick stage, making it unwieldly.

Put them in a fairing, fairings have no collider so it will work.

I don't understand what you are implying. Perhaps post a screenshot or two for some examples that you have?

No, build a empty fairing, and then put a girder in the center, then add the DLC hinges and ore to it as well as the KAL-1000, the hinges will phase through the fairing.

You don’t need to put at center of mass I realized.

Depending on the size of the probe, a small piston with a weight of some kind on the end might work- attach it to a hinge to make it lie along the probe's axis when not in use then rotate hinge and extend cylinder.

Or just use KSP's magic reaction wheels instead and pretend there's a despin device there.

Another option would be to mount empty fuel tanks radially, possibly attached to beams to get more distance.  By transferring fuel from the center tank to the radial tanks, you are accomplishing the same thing, moving mass away from the center.   That would be much less elegant than the above mentioned suggestions using hinges or pistons however.

Unfortunately, the stock game doesn’t have cables you can reel in and out.
