You may want heat shields on both sides. Don’t use ablative shields

That, and what looks like a highly eccentric orbit, to spend less than 20s near Pe. Gives the pod 75 yrs to cool down before the next pass. :D

A secret nobody's probably realized is that my time warp is at 100X which is a lot better for cooling. It's because at 100X time warp the heat calculations are done as if the craft is a single part, massively improving heat conduction between parts.

I think that keeping in the spirit of the challenge would require using 1x timewarp at periapsis.

In 1x time warp, the closest you can get without resorting to exploits is something like 150,000-200,000 km from the surface.

With exploits you can get all the way to the atmosphere:
