Well since my last post I've tweaked the dragonfly punks (name pending) and recorded a video with them. While editing I found a pretty cool shot. Haven't cleaned it up yet but it showcases the plane pretty nicely (play with sound):

Yeah, the shaking is pretty light in real time, but at X3 speed it gets all over the place :P

Nah these are old Axon boats. I'm not sure the planes would be able to get so close if they were going up against lasers and missiles. In the video I shot the whole defending fleet had nothing but dakka spam (and with barrage set to true lol).

Well, and a single laser.

From an older KSP game (1.3.0) and is the game I most often play. This was a patrol craft I put together and still use in the game.

And the other one that took a while to master? Yeah, going to share that one, too. Sure, it's a space shuttle and it took me forever to get things to work just right. As always, I probably over-engineered things (and over-thought things, too). But it did fly, and I still use it to ferry cargo and passengers to my LKO space station. It's also in my 1.3.0 version of the game.

This thread is oddly inactive.

It can also dock to a carrier to refuel. At least in theory. I haven't tried yet.

Ah it'll chug along. In any case here's another plane:

Carrier-compatible VTOL, 20k ΔV altogether, though this is in reality less as some liquid fuel has to be kept aside for the aerospikes. The intended operating procedure is to have them splash down into the water, then sidle up to the carrier deck and step up onto it with the aerospikes.

It's a bit difficult to get them to align properly, but it's manageable.

The carrier in the picture is a work in progress; I might make it a little bit wider so that the planes have more elbow room. And of course the superstructure is missing (as is hopefully evident).

oddly enough when I tried to argue that this was in fact a real loadout used by the squadron of Swordfishes that attacked Bismarck to provide air cover and that I should be allowed to submit this for competition I was denied, the injustice!

I made some flying cannons. They're great fat buggers but surprisingly maneuverable.

They were supposed to be the bane of navy craft, but unfortunately the AI settings don't provide enough options to program them right :'(

Also they tend to pitch into the water while maneuvering. I had six against one boat and all six overestimated their ability to pull up and went splash.

I remade my flying cannon prototypes (from a previous post halfway up this page) as I'm coming back from a hiatus and couldn't remember how the heck I built them. The good news is that the remake came out several times more maneuverable. The bad news is they somehow ended up at 75 parts instead of 65, and I can account for like four extra parts, but there's apparently some mystery objects somewhere that are eating up the rest. It might be struts. I can't remember if the original prototype had struts (I haven't re-downloaded it yet).

Anyways, the remake:

These things are supposed to inhabit a very particular niche, but I haven't figured out how to properly configure the AI pilots yet. See the thing is that nowadays a BDA+ navy ship will have three things: first, lasers, to completely and utterly negate missiles and fast attack craft; second, very powerful, part-effective armor; and third, large guns to counter that same armor on enemy ships.

The craft I make are all white and unarmored. The aesthetic looks robotic and futuristic to my eyes, and I don't want to change it, but it leaves me in a sticky spot. My boats with big guns can't hit on the same level as armored ships, and my smaller, fast attack craft get skewered by lasers. Even if I stay out of laser range and restrict combat to punching it out long range with cannons, my boats will crumble faster because, again, they have no armor.

So I need to stay out of laser range and be much, much harder to hit with heavy guns. But navy ships can only get so small. To be that elusive, they'd need to like, fly or – ohhhh.

A large plane with big cannons that can stay out of laser range fits the bill exactly. Only issue is the AI doesn't want to stay out of laser range, it's very enthusiastic and it's terrible for my strategy lol.

Currently I haven't put lasers on these things, but they have space up top for one, or a missile turret. That being said, MK2 plane parts are tough and it can take as many as five missiles to knock out the planes. I'd also like to configure the AI so that it ignores missiles, because all the squiggly evasive maneuvers aren't really necessary if it can shrug off a few hits, but I'm still working on that.
