Robotic Drift Bug

Recommended Posts

KSP doesn't  save the stress being applied to a craft

There are two things at work in KSP now:

  1. Non Robotic parts not connected to robotic parts snap back into their original positions on saving the game
  2. Robotic parts and everything connected to them keep their current stressed position on saving and then locks that as its normal position on reloading

How to counter Robotic Drift:

  1. Keep your crafts in orbit to avoid forces being applied
  2. Make sure that non robotic structures that have robotic parts connected don't sag

Non robotic structures snap back into the original positions on saving the game leaving the robotic parts (and anything connected) left in the sagged position causing gaps, which will just get worse every time its saved. You can also see what it will be close to its saving position by using Timewarp.

         3. You can use same vessel interaction to reduce robotic drift

The following video is of a crane that @I2ocketGuycreated. I added pieces below the robotic pieces that are part of the non robotic structure and applied same vessel interaction to hold the robotics and parts connected above. Its not perfect but reduces robotic drift quite a bit.

Bug #28075: New Docking Ports are causing drift similar to robotics. - Kerbal Space Program - Squad Bugtracker

New bug report relating to the new rotating docking ports that came with 1.12.0 . They cause all parts within a craft to update their stressed joint locations on saving the game just like the robotics.

To have drifting issues all you now need is just one docking ports. no robotics necessary.

Upvotes would be nice guys on this one ;)

We were told that docking ports aren't robotic and therefore cant cause drift.

Because that ended up being incorrect means that the devs have more information now they didn't have before.

This could actually point them in the right direction to where the root issue is
