Trying to find help on something for the forum.

  1. Click the envelope icon in the upper right. (An "envelope" was a folded paper structure that was used to contain messages before the internet.)

  2. At the bottom of the dropdown is "Go to inbox", click it:

  3. On the left side of the inbox screen is a list of messages, at the bottom is this:

  4. Type your query into that box and press enter

I've tried that, and get no results.  And I'm not sure if your commentary in parentheses was meant as a joke but I'm not feeling it as a joke and more an attempt to insult me.

OK. FYI, it's generally a good idea to mention the things that you have tried when asking for help, if you don't want to receive them as suggestions in response. When you asked, "Is it even possible?", that sounded like you did not know about this feature, since if you did, I would have expected you to report that it wasn't working instead.

A joke, of course. At the expense of computer UIs that rely on visual metaphors that drift slowly out of date, such as the floppy disk icon used to mean "save" long after most users stopped using them.

As for what's going on here, I did confirm that this feature works by searching my own messages before taking all those screenshots, uploading them to Imgur, and posting them, so my guesses are:

  • Mismatch in spelling or phrasing between the message and the search term
  • The PM was sent on a different site, for example someone messaged you on Reddit and you're searching here

Yeah I started thinking perhaps my search term wasn't generating results after reading your post so will have to try harder.
