Problems grabbing asteroid.

Recommended Posts

Having extreme issue grabbing asteroid with grabber, never had this problem before with grabbing asteroid.

90~ton asteroid.  When I grab asteroid (many attempts!), the grabber does grab it but then the ship and the asteroid start doing a kraken dance until eventually the asteroid and the grabber are no longer attached.  In some of my attempts, the grabber arm would visually appear to go through the surface of the asteroid before actually grabbing/connecting.

Is this a center of mass issues? Any advice? Could this be cause my a mod?

Autostruts could be causing this, especially autostruts to the heaviest part; the asteroid is probably the single heaviest part in the craft once it gets grabbed so it changes the autostruts and that's a good way to get a Kraken attack. Autostruts to root and grandparent parts could also be affected if the combined craft plus asteroid has a different root than the craft alone (maybe the asteroid is the new root?) and generally speaking, if any autostruts get recalculated in flight it ends in explosions.

Having SAS switched on can make it worse as the control point will be some distance from the centre of mass, as would the reaction wheels generating the torque; any small wobble would be amplified by the SAS constantly overcorrecting and if this is happening at the same time as glitchy autostruts, bye-bye asteroid grabber.

Disable autostruts and SAS before grabbing, then once you grab the asteroid, release the grappler pivot, target the asteroid's COM and point the craft right at it, then lock it back in place- this makes it a lot easier to move around with that big space rock attached, especially for moving with the main engines. Autostrut the asteroid to the root part (yes, you can autostrut asteroids!) and some key parts to the heaviest part, which will keep the craft stable, but only after you've grabbed that rock.
