Unlikely the rent customer prefers to buy another kidney but his own. He will likely return the ship to return his part back.

Serious answer would be to control the fuel. The fuel is only obtainable if you have a certificate saying you own the ship or are paying your loan back well, you get access to fuel. Fuel in sold in cartridges, each containing a fixed amount of fuel. The cartridges contain a chip that locks the fuel if either a law is broken or the loan is not paid. Any other resellers have their chips deactivated, and all ships with illegal cartridges are tracked down and deactivated. They are then sent back(too cruel to leave them to die) and arrested for loan non-payment.

Now what else is loaded in cartridges, supposedly tightly controlled yet criminals get their hands on easily?

Fuel manufacturers have no incentive to help the banks with their little money problem, I doubt such a convoluted scheme would ever work. However, just like ij ocean shipping, it should be easy to chain up any ship that has an outstanding warrant, assuming the entire universe of ports and stations is law-abiding. Which is likely not the case either.

Well yes...actually come think of it their us a solution...albeit definitely fiction in my past.

 

Ship to station portals...portaling in propellant. Don't pay? They don't send you any more propellant.

The fuel should contain a combination of rare short-living isotopes, available only at certified manufacturers.

But the local traffic control is better.
