The New Stock Repository Version 0.21

Recommended Posts

This Ancient Launchersthread inspired me to make a full-sized version of the Vostok or R7 rocket family. I've seen a lot of smaller 1.25m versions, so I wanted to try my hand at something a bit bigger. The upper stages aren't at all accurate, but I mainly wanted to get the lower shape of the lifter correct, as well as the engine configuration. I used a few tricks, but I didn't actually need to turn off clipping in the debug menu. Let me know what you think.

Feel free to download the .craft file and improve on it.

Here's a spaceplane that will ferry up to three tonnes to low/mid Kerbin orbit and return. (125-150km I've managed, possibly room for improvement with more adept piloting.)

Thread for CATA3t

Note, this should be stock. I manually removed a mod partmodule from the craft file (Lazor docking camera on the docking node), but should load as stock. Should this not be the case, I will edit and reupload. Please message me with any issues...

Here's is a plane I've spent a good few hours building ad tweaking. Pretty much my only working design. I haven't designed it to carry a payload, but it can reach a respectable altitude, and will cruise at 20km+ and is able to hit 1800m/s. If anyone could modify / improve upon my design and upload it, I would be greatful for the help and any other hints and tips.

Also, can someone please confirm something for me? I think I have the front canards mounted facing backwards! Am I correct? Oddly, it flies quite well, whereas when they were facing forward it would just flip end over end!? Still has a tendancy to lose control and high altitude though.

The canards do not care about their orientation, you were probably moving them a bit forward when you placed them the other way. With planes you want to keep the center of lift behind the center of mass, you can find this by clicking the little wing and the weight looking symbol underneath the symmetry button. The blue arrow should be behind the yellow dot.

At high altitude there is less air to right you, so you should be careful. Also make sure that your center of mass doesn't shift behind the center of lift as you burn fuel, that could cause problems. Hope this helps.

Here is a more realistic payload for my Soyuz/R-7 rocket. I had to get a bit creative with the parts and do some clipping with the debug menu. It technically seats 3 Kerbals, even though it starts with only one. I haven't done any testing on this outside of the atmosphere, so I'm curious to see if it can dock OK. There aren't any clipping issues that interfere with any functions. I also forgot to put on solar panels, but I'd like to pretend I did so for customization purposes.

Just attach anything below this with a large decoupler, and you're good to go.

I was inspired to make this after noticing that the real Soyuz falls somewhere between the two part sizes in this game. I used this for size reference:

A6scXOr.jpg

Action Groups:

1 - Close intakes (they're only there for cosmetic purposes, and you don't need the extra drag)

2 - Detach top section (for reentry)

Edit:

After some testing, this craft can't actually dock without tearing itself apart.

K-33 Venture Star

So, another SSTO shuttle. But this one is based on a very interesting concept, a VTOHL lifting body using aerospikes NASA once pursued. I think I nailed that part, and I've improved on the original by adding turbojets an excess fuel so coming back to the runway is easier. Don't worry, purists: take out the turbojets and the aviation tanks, and it'll still be SSTO, probably with more delta-v in space. I just didn't want to risk it not being a good glider, which it is when empty. Payload are three kerbals and >2.6mT of whatever.

4zL82FP.jpg

Now the details. It does use turbojets, so let them spool up before releasing the clamps. You will have lots of unused liquid fuel in orbit: as far as I'm concerned, that means anytime return since it can fly continents to get back to KSC. Also, delta-v on low (about 100kms) orbit is around 0.5km/s, so not really interplanetary unless you refuel. All the usual stuff including docking capability. Boy am I being boring in this description, good thing I took pictures:

I call this, The Leaf. Capable of reaching a steady altitude of 30,000 meters while still having the ability to have your engine running. While going 2000 meters per second, and maybe even a little bit faster, this can get you anywhere on Kerbin extremely fast. The handling on it is very good, with the center of mass, lift, and thrust nearly all in the same spot. This is my first space plane that is actually good.

This is my first post but I just had to share this with all of you

While building just another most likely impossible-to-fly-machine, this one actually worked, no wings attached! :0.0:

Its an atmostpheric VTOL, very stable, I even managed to get it back straight after some jets flaming out with the help of RCS thrusters. If you don't do too crazy stuff you will only need RCS for emergencies and maybe to help you land.

It also has some more or less horizontal placed jet engines for picking up some extra horizontal (can change depending on perspective :P) speed.

Theres enough room for 7 kerbals aboard. Theres alot of extra power on the ship so theres room to add more stuff.

Theres also a docking port on top for easier landing.

Action group 2: Toggle horizontal engines

After some extensive testing, I've managed to get my new and improved Soyuz into working order. Separation of the boosters is now a bit more treacherous, but I think I've managed to get it working through the use of Sepratrons to push them outward. It isn't perfect, but I was hoping to get some feedback on that issue.

Warning: This craft has 411(!) parts. Be patient. After the boosters separate, things get better.

In orbit (still no solar panels, but there are some in the .craft file!). At this point, there is plenty of fuel and RCS to do orbital maneuvers and rendezvous (and deorbit).

Action Groups:

1 - Close intakes (they're purely for decoration!)

2 - Lock gimbals on boosters and radial engines

3 - Open solar panels

Abort - Hit backspace to activate the launch escape tower, then quickly hit 0 (zero) to jettison the orbital section and open the chutes.

Docking ports may need tweaking, can get them both to connect on the ground on kerbin, but the Mun is a different story. Happy Flying!

I'd like to submit my all-stock Soyuz replica.

Name: Yoonyte-I (Soyuz TMA-M Lookalike/Workalike) (Pronounced Unite-I, since "Soyuz" is Russian for "Unity".)

Craft file: HERE

Features good or bad:

-345 Parts

-Looks close to a real-life Soyuz rocket and capsule

-3 man descent module

-3 man orbital module

-Unmanned support module

-Easily achieves a 100Km circular orbit with tons of fuel left in the orbital insertion stage (usually about 80-90% if done right), and the capsule itself with full tanks

-Easy to fly (the entire main rocket is controlled by only four LV-T45 engine gimbals, so turning is slow and smooth)

-Leaves 10 pieces of debris in orbit under normal operation

Screenshot(The ship in the back ground is Thunderbird 3, coming over to dock with thunderbird 5, if you want this go here http://forum.kerbalspaceprogram.com/showthread.php/33051-Stock-Thunderbirds%21 )

http://i.imgur.com/rtP1JwD.jpg

Thunderbird 5 is a space station. Thunderbird 3, and pretty much anything else can dock with it if you Design something right- The docking port is inside the mouth of the ship. It can hold 12 kerbals i think, and it has spacious interiors.
