Framerate periodically drops to less than 10 FPS for no apparent reason

Recommended Posts

Recently, I've noticed that I've been experiencing some performance issues with KSP, and only KSP; no other games appear to have such performance issues. What will happen is that, at seemingly random intervals, my framerate will drop from about 80-100 FPS down to less than 10 FPS. I first noticed this happening a few weeks ago and was a little annoyed by it, but it wasn't anything game-breaking. However, over time, this has gotten progressively worse, to the point that almost half the time I am pulling less than 10 frames per second. I don't believe that this has anything to do with my PC not being powerful enough to run KSP, as it exceeds all of the recommended system requirements. Some suggestions on possible courses of action would be appreciated.

My PC specs:

Model: MSI Stealth GS66

Processor: 10th Gen Intel Core i7- 10750h

RAM: 16 GB DDR4

Graphics: Nvidia RTX 2070 with Max-Q Design

Video Memory: 8 GB DDR6

Storage: 1 TB SSD (792 GB available space)

Ah alas, if only the solution was better specs. KSP cares not about specs.

So, the question is: what were you doing at the time the rate tanked? how many parts did your ship have? and are your drivers up to date?

The issue occurred both when I was building craft in the VAB/SPH and in-flight. I first noticed it when I was driving a rover with about 70 parts, and it does not seem to get worse with increasing part counts. My PC is fairly new; I only got it about 6 months ago.
