Space borne sports, music and snacks.

Recommended Posts

This is a thread to discuss what music, sports, and snacks would or could be popular in space, along with coming up with ideas for them. :)

A space borne band (the early ones at least) would be constricted in the mass of personal stuff they could bring (especially if they are on an interplanetary mission), so lighter, smaller instruments would be used. A harmonica would be a good choice, and onboard computers could be used to make larger instruments' sounds. So space based music would most likely consist of lightweight instruments such as whistles, harmonicas and triangles with computerized sounds too.

A game/sport that could be awesome in microgravity would be flying modified small drones. It would be like flying a small torchship around in your spacecraft. Combat and racing with these things would be awesome.

Do you have any other ideas?

Like a basketball, but doesn't depend on the gravity

Do you still execute the losing team?

Edit:  'sacrifice'

...sorry - being culturally insensitive.  It's an offering, not an execution

Still, Vegas will love the brutality, but hate that there are limits on the stats due to player retention and longevity

Bowling might be fun in microgravity. Of course pins would have to be magnetically attached and secured by pieces of strings. Ball wouldn't be rolled too, just thrown. Hmmm - maybe place everything in a wide pipe, and one of the rules would be that ball can't touch the walls?

As for snacks - nothing crumbly. Or in pieces small enough to get into places they shouldn't.

Dances. Dances could be fun. And risky LOL. Though macarena should be relatively easy and safe.

(Just noticed).
Afair, they were sacrificing not the losing, because who needs the rubbish, but the winning team, as they had won the honour to be sent to gods,

No way, we need to bring a full pipe organ. It's necessary.

And zero-g cockroach races..

(Just in case: no need to let them run along a track.
Put them in the center of a 2d or 3d sphere (the 2d one is also called "circle") and bet which one crosses the sphere first.)

***

Also the classic bear training.

1.
A dance, following the hand with a thing smelling with honey.

In zero-g can be a 3d dance.

2.
In zero-g even a bear theoretically can jump throw the ring of fire, but the problem is that in zero-g the fire doesn't look like a normal fire.

***

The snake dance also could be practiced, but the training methodics is as brilliantly simplistic as brutal, so probably no.
Also the snakes are expendable, so they need a lot of them, but an inflatable serpentarium is unlikely possible as they can pierce it with bites.

***

And this, btw rises a question about the horse races.

On the one hand, the orbital horse racing would be spectacular.
On the other hand, they can't run in zero-g.

So, while after the "cargo-rated" and "human-rated" space crafts there should be the "cat-rated", with artificial gravity, even after the "cat-rated" there should be "horse-rated", with enforced structure able to carry a pack of running horses.

As a normal horse track should be at least 1 600 m long, and the artificial gravity means the whole station rotation, the station hull radius should be ~250 m, and this is at once the normal radius for a human artificial gravity.

So, the "horse-rated" station is actually the normal space station size, and any station with gravity (and an interstellar ship as well) should have a toroidal hippodrome, which is also a stadium.

This automatically means a circular rowing channel aside.

Actually, there are  “real” Quidditch matches, but obviously played in 2D. But in microgravity, it could be actual 3D Hogwarts-style Quidditch. And yeah, a spinning (or tumbling!) arena would up the challenge level.

We can start counting post till the room biojet race suggestion.

(Don't say that it's mine, I just know the space forum audience well.)

This will get messy as in solid or worse liquid fuel propellant. Not an sport you want to make popular.
Something like zero-g rugby or baseball sounds fun, one issue is that its will be an very experience based game, the ones doing it 50 times will always beat the first timers

Airnim (aka Oxynim, Breathenim, etc)

Like the  https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nim but with air.

Quote

Nim is a mathematical game of strategy in which two players take turns removing (or "nimming") objects from distinct heaps or piles. On each turn, a player must remove at least one object, and may remove any number of objects provided they all come from the same heap or pile. Depending on the version being played, the goal of the game is either to avoid taking the last object or to take the last object.

2 or more players + one can of oxygen with gas mask for all.

Who makes the last breath, wins.
