Was selected for flight due to labourer origin and political background; failed the flight program; confused the ship orientation and blamed the sensor malfunction; had in-flight health problems with food consuming, vomiting, menstrual disorder; on landing had shared the saved food between the local dwellers possibly to hide the violation of the scheduled nutrition.

My vote goes to Alan Sheppard, not for any particular incident, but because he was was an all-round 'cool dude'.

Project Mercury did not have a smooth beginning. Just a few weeks after astronaut selection, an unmanned Project Mercury rocket launched at Cape Canaveral failed spectacularly, exploding after liftoff as the astronauts watched. Shepard’s response: "Well, I’m glad they got that out of the way."
