"a seafloor ridge that stretches from New Zealand to Tonga has the highest density of underwater volcanoes in the world...

On September 14, researchers with Tonga Geological Services estimated the area of the island to be 4,000 square meters (1 acre) and the elevation to be 10 meters (33 feet) above sea level. By September 20, the island had grown to cover 24,000 square meters (6 acres). The new island is located southwest of Late Island, northeast of Hunga Tonga-Hunga Ha‘apai, and northwest of Mo‘unga‘one "

Tonga back in the news with a strong quake.

The U.S. Geological Survey said the magnitude 7.3 quake was centered 132 miles east-southeast of Neiafu, Tonga, at a depth of 15 miles. It predicted strong shaking but said the probability of serious damage or casualties was small.

The U.S. Tsunami Warning System issued a tsunami advisory, which is one step below a tsunami warning.

Ring of Fire in action.

It got me thinking. We roughly know what effects volcanic eruptions have on life on land. But did anyone study the effects of huge ashfalls and underwater lava eruptions on underwater communities? How algae react to the release on mineral nutrients? How much of it filters to the bottom-feeders in deep water areas?

Yes, people study that.

New article on the incredible lightning accompanying the eruption.

230106153835-01-lightning-report-tonga-v

Over the course of just 6 hours, the Tongan volcano triggered nearly 400,000 lightning events. Half of all the lightning in the world was concentrated around this volcano at the eruption's peak

One-minute snapshots of lightning over the Tonga volcano eruption on January 15. The lightning surrounded the volcano "in distinctive ring patterns during the peak of the eruption,"
