Pouicpouic try on Elcano challenge

Recommended Posts

A new approach ? : only 1 launch for the whole challenge (failed)

Secondary objective : only one rover and only one transfer vessel (2 launches) : Done ! A GrandTour Elcano ;)

"A rover to rule them all, a rover to find them. A rover to bring them all and in the darkness bind them."

stock + no mods

- electric propulsion only (wheels and rotor)
- carried with a single vessel (without nuclear or ion) in the whole system (so the challenge would be finished with eve ... cause it seems delicate to come back from there with the rover)

Spoiler

?imw=5000&imh=5000&ima=fit&impolicy=Lett

First craft : drag problem (reach LKO with only1100m/s left)

?imw=5000&imh=5000&ima=fit&impolicy=Lett

second craft : 1520m/s left in LKO, more than enough !

Day -2 : found the elcano challenge topic, became an instant fan xD you all are hardcore! (in a good way)

Day -1 : dozens of tests later, i thought it is possible to do it in 1 launch (edit: yes but not with the initial craft). more tests. ok i go for it.

Day 0 : ah yes I didn't think of that, and this too... more tests, more (edit : not enough...its seems)

Day 1 : starting 1/4 of kerbin KSC, north pole

Day 2 : north pole  - south pole

Day3 : Spole - KSC (crossed indian ocean at the end for some reasons that remain unclear to myself), but, Kerbin circumnavigation is done !

"A rover to rule them all" ;)

?imw=5000&imh=5000&ima=fit&impolicy=Lett

some spec 5 years of rover crafting for the best results !

all shrimps are empty --> structural usage only (and float) / empty shrimps are one of the best part in the game, imo, (stock+) cause of its length in relation to its low weight --> only 0,15t. So its far better than other structural parts with same size. Small air intake are just for decorative purpose. No lift-generating parts (its not a plane). 16 wheels and 2 small rotors (half power). 6.15t 2.9m*7.8m*5.2m

Need a lot of small adjusts after launch for a endurance challenge like this. Maybe I'll detail them later

Day 2 report :

This rover is so good !! :)  vast majority of time 70m/s without trouble.

My crew. Here are their heads as soon as the ground speed is different of zero...

Day 3 report : kerbin circumnavigation (mostly grounded) complete ! 60%/70% of time = fun ; 30%/40% of time = boring ^^

Spoiler

boring = mostly nothing to do... (advice for next try : more speed during boring time)

Day 4/5 : new transfer vessel crafted, caught the rover on the launch pad --> 1500m/s left in LKO, more than enough to reach minmus (and pol from laythe ground I think).

Spoiler

Minmus reached.

First attempt i broke the rover just after reaching a speed of 70,3m/s (near the north pole, there is a slope of several km from 5000m height)

Spoiler

?imw=5000&imh=5000&ima=fit&impolicy=Lett

Lost kerbnet access during around 10 minutes. Lost 2 wheels gain... at this rate I won't have enough kits for the whole system...

but yes : Minmus polar circumnavigation done !

Grabbed the rover again for a rapid mun transfer after several days spent refueling the vessel. Mun reached. I'm super excited about doing (again) hours of driving on the mun with this rover !

Keep in mind that re-supply missions are allowed.  The requirement is that all re-supply missions must also be flown from Kerbin- you can't cheat re-supply ships to their destination.  But if you need to deliver more repair kits, that is absolutely allowed.

Been busy at work the last few days, but I'll try to keep up with you!

Yes thanks, but in that case my secondary objective will also fail (2 launches) --> I have enough left to repair 18 wheels at this point. We'll see, if I have to do a resupply mission then we'll move on to the third objective: one single rover xD

and it will be good... until another problem will make everything fail... and then, ... I can't remember what's my 5th goal? ah yes : elcano challenge normal difficulty ! i think this one is already perfect xD

I think this is the best rover I've built so far. Pure joy to drive it on the Mun. Without the propellers and without the things to float, it would be just awesome.
Well, I had some losses (reloads) mainly because of those blades breaking on excessive impacts. (they are very close to the ground to be aligned with the CoM)
I have a feeling that this circumnavigation of the mun is going to be too fast...

Day 8/9 :

Rover caught again and transferred to Duna.

A few months ago, I did the duna polar half-circumnavigation (equator/north pole/equator), so this time I decided to stay close to the equator. For the first time I'm going to make a "logical" circumnavigation, i.e. heading west to benefit from a very long daylight.

Interesting fact: my average speed largely exceeds the equatorial rotation speed of Duna (about 31m/s). So here, the warps are not to make the night pass, but to let Duna turn a little on itself.

The propellers work even better than expected. I was afraid to stagnate below 50m/s, but on the contrary, I have to brake permanently to avoid breaking the rover at 70m/s on the dunes.

Already more than 1/4 of the revolution done with a maximum speed of 73,6m/s reached in the grand canyon. I will make a small stop at my "W" base in a few hours.

Duna complete !

?imw=5000&imh=5000&ima=fit&impolicy=Lett

Rover transfered to Ike after a quick stop at the "Ike space station" just for upgrading my pilot. lvl1 --> 4, now I've finally access to the SAS fixed on the maneuver. This will be usefull.

At this point this rover has already covered by itself 8250km, which is about 30% of the minimum 27500 to finish the whole challenge. And i used 5 of the 22 possible wheel repairs (approx 23%)

Last top speed on Duna : 76,3m/s

Spoiler

Small jump at cruising speed (note : brakes activated to stop propellers when i jump)
