problem with spaceplane urgent

Recommended Posts

after a day of flytesting,i found out that the majority of test flights failed on the runway, splashed into the ocean(due to negative aoa somehow),or stalled
oof can someone link to a flight tutorial?

@AeroGav

@James Kerman

ps:in these "intermediate spaceplane design" lessons recently, everyone all probited everything but rapiers(or at least, banished the use of nervae on sstos)

weird rule, idk why,and idk why rapiers are so special(bc its both a swivel and a whiplash?)

pps:aerogav will be angry at my design put on kerbalx, ive already covered nodes with correctly sized nose cones offline but not updated on kerbalx

Yes, because they function in both airbreathing and vacuum mode it saves on dry mass, even though they don't have the best ISP in vacuum  (you are not carrying engines that can only be used in one mode and then just act as dead weight).

Disclaimer - I'm not the best spaceplane pilot but I can try adding ISRU and crew to your design and run a mission to Duna and back over the next few days.

WHAT?

(still awaiting flight tutorial,@AeroGav?)

okay

when i was looking at bw's videos(ported to ixigua.com)i saw something like"with maximized mass per engine, the craft required an unusually shallow flight profile"

i think that that applies to my craft too

bradley was correct about that!successful liftoff!

then accent to 10000m

nope,can only accent to 9000

then speed up to orbital speed(manuver mode)

10000m,950m/s

wings scorching red but not burning

20000m/s,1440m/s

wings still too hot,apoasis 25km

rapiers still jet

40000m,2300m/s

apoasis 115km,get it to orbit!(welp forgot to remove payload simulator)

(after doing summer holiday homework)

whoops this design lacks reaction wheels(one is not enough)

orbit with 784 dv left

enough for minmus but not duna

(working on isru set replacing payload simulator)

after replacing payload simulator to lighter isru payload,1742m/s left on orbit

gotta refuel at minmus(with bob kerman, this is my first isru refuel)

oh no just foung out that he was a scientist and the engineer bill was at another craft

whoops

transfer route to minmus,852 dv left

minmal capture,589m/s

minimal about-to-land,370m/s(we are running out of fuel!!!WHAT?!!!)

minmus touch ground 233m/s

phew

lemme test refueling thing

refuel success despite the absence of bill who is flying round and round kerbin orbit

vaild reaction groups too

lemme test takeoff on microgravity(minmus)

minimal orbit 2547dv

kerbin+minimus double escape 2496dv

where should i go?duna?okay

but jet engines stop working in duna!

dunanian transfer should take 800dv but it actually took a lot less due to plane doing exercise and getting slimmer

dunanian tranfer 1638dv(whoops still consumed 800dv)

nvm,it is sufficient

dunanian capture+ike transfer(u need to avoid hitting ike but now i want ike to refuel)1342dv

ike capture 921dv

fuel getting a bit narrow

oops need to land on ike at night

lights on

dammit

shouldn't have trusted mech jeb autolanding

thank goodness i have saved before doing this

phew finnally landed!!!!!!!:joy:

2791dv duna refueled(+jettison remaining 300 ore)

next is ike and jool!(not planning return trip due to happy bob kerman and full fuelsages)

@James Kerman

it turns out that ur right!this thing has the exact amount of dv to go to duna with isru!

the cons are:bad controlling in space and bad controlling in dunanian atmosphere and lack of lights(lemme take a break and eat lunch, while bob can have some snacks despite not helping on isru :))

back to mission

ike landed succesfully

next stop is jool system

pol would be the ideal site for a ssta parking lot

whoop close pass on an ike mountain

ike orbit 2323dv

ikean double escape 2138dv

oops cant direct transfer too jool

should maximize the oberth effect

okay ive decided to pay minmus a flying visit

wait

flying beside a big asteroid would be better

so there goes my first rendesvous with an astroid

six years of wait?aww man lemme choose next ast

nah this one's goin to collide into earth

neidong 1!on the correct orbit!

wait how can i hang onto that ast?it has no gravity

so now i have 2100dv,im stranded in duna orbit, how can i get to jool?

going to dres would cost 1827dv and ill crash on it!

oh maybe i can get more dv by using fuel so if i manuver i have a small chance of surviving okay ill try

Congratulations!

It took me a lot of time to be able to do what you have done in the last few days so I'd say you're probably a natural spaceplane pilot and designer. Onward and upward!

Using this online tool it looks like you'll need around 1350 to get to the system so you'll probably need to use some gravitational assists off the moons to get to Laythe (the only other place in the stock Kerbin system where you can use airbreathing mode) and refuel.

actually im using rocket driving logic :D

turns out that driving sstas aren't that hard

it says 1800 just to dres :/

dres orbit success with 517dv left!

weeeeee

188dv,land!
