KSP2 Sneakpeeks

I will point out on the performance front, that its very likely these are taken from a marketing teams machines, not some core devs as far as I know. Which likely means they're running the game on business craptops or hand me down hardware from the core dev team. Possibly even personal computers what with WFH employees, which again may just not be super powerful, just cuz you work marketing/community for a videogame doesn't mean your into PC gaming. It would be nice to get a clip of the game cranked 'just for show' on a machine that can handle it. The earlier concerns over textures, scatter, etc may just come down to the machine/settings, potentially the autoscanned defaults (which tend to be conservative).

Please do correct me if I'm wrong and these are confirmed coming from maxed hardware already. Along with that, if a team member does know that I'm in fact correct, then use these complaints and confusion as a business case to get the marketing team some top tier hardware :P

Usually advertisers get a good salary and sit at good computers in wonderful conditions. I hope they don't have 13700k/4090...

I don't see any KSP 1 screenshots that look better than KSP 2. Blackrack's clouds would clash against the super-cartoonish almost cel shaded Kerbals, even Restock doesn't manage to fully fix Squad's borked art direction, and no-one seems to have fixed that thing you occasionally get where terrain textures become super stretched if you fly far away to the outer Kerbol system. KSP 1 looks exactly like what you described, an attempt at hacking something together from a 10yr/o game that's greater than the sum of its parts. KSP 1 modded really doesn't look better than the new hotness, not even close really.

you underestimate how good modded ksp 1 can look a lot I think, like, Blackrack's clouds actually are arguably more impressive given they have a low-performance impact on the game for what they are.  I'm just saying, it's not all bad, and I'm actually gonna miss this art style a ton. A_start.png

Wait... Did the chute cover close itself or was it repacked...

I noticed that too, it would be great if we can close them after landing in a situation like this for aesthetic reasons. (Maybe you already can in ksp1, I haven’t played for several years)

You could repack the chute with a kerbal, but you're out of luck for autonomous missions.

Excellent! Thank you.

I fall in the latter camp as well, that I want to see in the game what I'd see if it was my own human eyes looking at the game's scene.

Which makes me wonder if I'm not explaining very well what I mean, because almost all of your articles are talking about why cameras can't see stars. I don't care about cameras. Gimme eyeballs. Your last article actually talks about what the human eye perceives in space- specifically how Neil Armstrong couldn't see stars until he was in the shadow of the LEM, which is what I desire in the game.

I just thought of something: Kerbal eyes.  Those big, buggy Kerbal eyes; much bigger than human eyes, with huge pupils.  More aperture, more focal length, bigger detectors.

Has anybody tried to model their performance?  I wonder how the world looks to Kerbals?

Pardon my eyes, but... what art style? I see a mishmash of styles if that's what you mean.

Guess i just have different tastes than you, idk what else to say?

The clouds, ship, and Kerbals if there were Kerbals in frame, would all look like they were sourced from completely different places. KSP 2 is trying to fix that, and I can say that the clouds in KSP 2 at least look like they are from the same game as the Kerbals. Same for the style they've chosen for parts, buildings and terrain. I can't say the same thing for the screenshot you sent me, I can really tell the clouds, ship, etc. were done by different people who weren't together to make a coherent style. Even in stock, Blackrack's clouds don't blend well with anything.

I worked for over a decade in marketing. Make no illusions. Those were the same standard machines the rest of the office had. We had one special computer for "creative" work (Photoshop, Illustrator, etc). "But ooh, don't you have to handle large sets of market data?" Yeah, that's what chunking is for.

I strongly doubt that a 300 bucks office typewriter is used to create commercials for KSP2. And if it is used, then there are questions to the project management. We can come up with many excuses for management - old builds, bad computers, covid, low settings. But I decided a long time ago not to work as a free lawyer for those who did not hire me.

You seem to think that the spectrum of computers is only fully blown gaming rigs and 12 year old hand-me-downs, and since the marketing staff isn't using the latter, they must be using the former? Most office work is done on i5's or i7's with 8 GB. Good enough for email, modest Excel and Powerpoint work.

Marketing is mostly that kind of work. Setting up and evaluating campaigns, developing plans, emailing with vendors. Not sure where you get the idea that marketing involves glitzy workstations for making full featured movies. They might have one machines like that but I doubt it — not when there's an entire department of graphic artists who can be asked to create creative work. If my project management team decided to blow tens of thousands of dollars on unneeded hardware I'd be firing them. Perhaps your experience is based on shows like Mad Men and not real life?

What marketers are you talking about? About those marketers who prepare advertising for computer games? In my life I have seen quite a lot of advertisements for computer games, and I have never heard excuses that the video has bad FPS because the advertiser has a very weak computer. And I don't really remember low FPS commercials, even indie games don't usually have FPS drops in teasers. Perhaps marketers working in the computer games market are embarrassed to upload videos from weak PCs? Come on, show me an example of a game video with bad FPS on the official YouTube channel of the game.

I think its important to remember these aren't part of a coordinated, specialist ad campaign where everything is preplanned and carefully reviewed. This is just a few sneak peaks for some extra social media engagement, comparable in concept to interns posting screenshots about a game in its lead up to release. They're not here to drive mass interest and excitement among new audiences, they're here to drip feed us some fun little tidbits over the few weeks before launch.

Set expectations accordingly, this isn't a budgeted campaign so much as it is marketing taking advantage of the community interest, and its budgeted accordingly. Someone probably gets a couple hours paid to play and run little missions to get sneak peak clips, between meetings and email blasts.

We're getting offtopic though, where was that thread about marketing?

Yea I'm partly to blame for this lol, my original point was to explain why we're seeing wildly fluctuating quality in the content - major videos have buttery smooth, 60fps gameplay with high quality textures and full AA/Lighting/Reflections, and sometimes we get something that looks like KSP1 put on High with a few hiccups. My explanation being the people making sneak peaks may just be running the game on standard office computers and not anything built for gaming, even mildly.

It is a pity that this person was not taught how to add acceleration in a video editor so that the FPS looks more acceptable
