Community Manager Ghostii_Space Posted May 12 Community Manager Share Posted May 12 Kerbonauts! The weekly challenge is... Dres! Primary: Land on Dres Stretch: Land in one of Dres' canyons and return safely to Kerbin Jeb: Land a rover on one side of the Dres canyon and jump the canyon. (You can use rockets to hop and cushion impact, but use wheels to gain speed) Val: Place a satellite in orbit within the outer gap in Dres' rings Good Luck and Happy Launching! PyroSA
The canyon being those three 'scars' on the surface? Right? Seems like orbiting in the ring would be easier than getting a vehicle down. Not to mention the luck I've had with vehicles...
Klapaucius
After next week, when life slows down a bit, I am hoping to go through all the landing challenges and catch up. But, for the moment, I thought I would post my last attempt at Dres. Does falling through it count as landing? Note my altitude...

From about 8 minutes in we head to Dres from the Rings. So we completed the primary challenge.

Socraticat
I've been purposefully avoiding interplanetary ventures lately. I find the game so much more enjoyable around and on Kerbin for now. However... I was inspired to go to Dres for an attempted canyon Jump! I say attempted because it was an absolute failure as a jump. I'm not as familiar with Dres. While I find it very forgiving in terms of gravity, I also severely underestimated the necessary speed required to actually get a good "Jump" on Dres. I do hope they beef up these rover wheels in the future- the cap out at like, 26m/s for me and that just seems "un-Kerbal". Give me 100m/s and a slider. I wanna go fast! Here's a cool screenshot. I'll post a video later.
Socraticat
Here's a short of the "Jump". I'd call it more of a fall. Getting speed up on Dres is rough going. Even if I could manage 26m/s with these wheels it wouldn't be enough for the kinematics to work out. I really want to see a good non-rocket powered jump.... ...and the long form Challenge Video. I never got off to plant a flag, so I guess I'll have to try this one again later- hopefully with fewer bugs. This trip highlighted them all for me. Note the Black color of Dres' rings... and Dres was completely missing while I was in SOI, only showed up once I got closer (same thing happened at Duna). Anyway, here's the vid: Edited May 22 by Socraticat
