IVA Space Flight

Recommended Posts

Fly to any planet while using IVA only, any capsule is fine, if you want to be awesome use the 1 man capsule only. You can fly to the moon also, you are awesome if you use interplanetary flight though. No map view. have fun and try not to kill to many kerbals!

A trip to the Mun wouldn't be out of the realm of possibility, but Minmus would be more challenging and interplanetary would be insanely difficult. With mods to give you a little more information inside the capsule, it would be feasible. My personal goal is an IVA Mun landing, 100% stock. I'll be sure to post when that never happens.

I know how to do this!

Someone! Quickly make a mod that puts the map view on a screen in the cockpit!

Hahaha.

I think it would be cool if there were some kind of calculator so you could plan and automate burns. Basically something to calculate how long you would have to burn with your current configuration to accomplish a given Delta-V. I know there's Kerbal Engineer and MechJeb, so it might be redundant, but I was thinking of something built into the IVA.

Freudian slip much ;) ?

Anyway, atleast the IVA has a radar altimeter, so landings are surely feasible. The rest ... well the interplanetary burns would need a ridiculously precise stopwatch and that needs a insane sidework to calculate the burn times. I think you could probably at best get to Jool SoI ...

It isn't so bad if you do proper mission planning. Have the wonderful spreadsheet of peri-apo velocity for orbits at altitude, horizonal positioning for launch, after that is fine. Just all about getting the numbers down. Hurray for radar altimeter in IVA, makes it great!. Hardest part is ensuring you are not landing on a hill.

Some sort of downward facing camera with a monitor inside the capsule would be great for this, or a monitor showing a line drawing or greyscale from the radar.

You could minimize the danger of a hill landing if you turn the window towards the planet and do a horizontal burn until it kill your horizontal speed when you spot a big flat area. Then you will drop like a rock and then it is time to give the radar altimeter some use :D

For a Mun landing you can do a test mission before calculating the burn time to get a encounter, it wouldnt be that hard to get an orbit because back a couple of updates ago there was no map view. Landing would probably be the hardest part I assume. But 3-man capsule has more windows so i would advise doing that.

It would actually probably be somewhat easy to do. Launch, do the gravity turn, but don't circularize the orbit, then if you burn long enough, you should end up orbiting the sun, and if you exit orbit, the orientation ball's green circles should flick slightly a lot. Then hopefully you have made a good orbit around the sun, so then you just push the orbit slightly very elliptical, by burning a good few minutes, and then you might intersect Duna or Jool some year! Then just retro burn till you look good, and do the normal landing procedures. I would bring a parachute as well, because most of the planets have some kind of atmosphere, and you do have a cockpit atmosphere reader.
