An amazing read, thanks! Let's hope that BERTY's software update lets it forget about Rozer's status as commander....

Now how about leaving Rozer behind on the surface of Duna? All those in favour say 'Aye'!

Aye!

CHAPTER 64

HELLO

QxNOpnO.jpg

***

JEB: Don't move. :points taser at Ned: Or I'll shoot.

NED: Wha... what? Jeb, it's me! It's... good to see you. Have you determined the cause of the malfunction? I checked the fusion cores and-

JEB: I said don't move. How are you feeling?

NED: Err, good I guess... Jeb, could you please don't point that thing at me? I don't think we're going to need-

JEB: Don't move or I swear to Kod I'll shoot you!

:Ned freezes:

JEB: Good.

NED: You are serious.

JEB: I am.

NED: Jeb, where's... where's Mal?

JEB: …

NED: And Johnny? Jeb, where are they? Are they fixing the power outage?

JEB: I need you to move these containers :points at them with flashlight: back to the DSS.

NED: Our supplies? Why?

JEB: Just do it.

NED: …

JEB: I said do it. :lowers the taser: Trust me.

NED: Okay... could you at least tell me what's-

JEB: Later. We need to take care of these containers first.

NED: Oh. And what if I refuse?

JEB: I wasn't asking. Get on with it. Now.

ROZER: RCS online, SAS online, LOX temperature nominal, methane flow nominal. All systems checked.

CAMBO: No, they aren't - you forgot about life support and-

ROZER: We won't use ECLSS. With damaged solar panels we have barely enough juice to make it into orbit and rendez-vous with “Proteus†and we need a safety margin for SAS or we won't be able to execute any orbital maneuvers.

DANREY: But it's, like, we can always use RCS to correct, right?

ROZER: Not enough monopropellant, we need it for the main engine of the second stage. Alright, we're as ready as we're going to be. Ascent program is loaded and checked.

CAMBO: Wait – shouldn't be do few more tests before firing the engines?

ROZER: Listen, every minute we spent sitting here with all systems powered on is a minute wasted. Do you want to run out of power few kilometers from “Proteus

CAMBO: …

ROZER: We don't have time for tests. The automatic ascent was tested hundreds of times on Kerbin.

CAMBO: But if it won't work, then that's it, right?

ROZER: Yes.

DANREY: Cool.

CAMBO: …

ROZER: Everyone's ready? When I start the ignition sequence there's no turning back, it's orbit or bust. Doctor - any questions?

CAMBO: No. Altimeter and accelerometer, I've got this.

ROZER: Good. Are you ready Danrey?

DANREY: You tell me, I've never had to go through the ascent with severe bone fracture. :laughs: These painkillers though, man, they are really strong stuff. I can barely feel my legs.

ROZER: Mhm. Prepare for ascent on my mark – ten, nine, eight-

DANREY: Shouldn't we say something, you know, just in case?

CAMBO: You mean like a goodbye?

ROZER: …six, ignition sequence started, four-

DANREY: Well, yeah.

ROZER: We won't die here. Two, one, mark!

ZTHCKVM.jpg

ROZER: Liftoff!

DANREY: Uh!

CAMBO: Ten meters per second!

ROZER: Altitude!

CAMBO: One hundred meters. Two hundred. Three hundred.

ROZER: External pressure is falling, we're leaving lower atmosphere.

gQW41Qv.jpg

CAMBO: Five hundred!

ROZER: The acceleration should – uh! - Cambo?!

CAMBO: Still ten meters!

ROZER: Give me radar altitude!

CAMBO: Almost 3000 meters!

M9zBOJ7.jpg

8D3ui15.jpg

DANREY: Uh!

ROZER: Hold on there!

CAMBO: Radar readings lost!

ROZER: Prepare for gravity turn!

xeCgC2T.jpg

WIlHVMj.jpg

CAMBO: Rozer, look!

ROZER: I see.

CAMBO: It's RCS error, we have to-

ROZER: Switching to manual!

MzuShkb.jpg

TQHPwVz.jpg

ROZER: Ascent protocol in stand-by.

CAMBO: What if we're off course?!

ROZER: We're not.

CAMBO: Good Kod, we can't – look, RCS is nominal again!

ROZER: Initiating ascent protocol – give me velocity!

CAMBO: 790 meters per second! We're leaving the atmosphere!

S1jPMlu.jpg

DANREY: Uh! Frak, can we throttle down a little?!

ROZER: No.

CAMBO: 830 meters! Dan, are you okay?

ROZER: Focus doctor, I need you now! Give me altitude.

CAMBO: But-

ROZER: Altitude!

CAMBO: 19 kilometers!

ROZER: Roger that.

0vcVLHt.jpg

CAMBO: 20 kilometers!

ROZER: I see. Apoapsis 55 kilometers, throttling down.

Fty0WZP.jpg

ROZER: 60 kilometers. 65 kilometers.

DANREY: Hey, look at that!

CAMBO: What?

DANREY: The mun!

i2HxAmt.jpg

CAMBO: Dan, are you feeling alright?

DANREY: What?

ROZER: 73 kilometers! Ascent protocol completed, we're coasting to the apoapsis.

CAMBO: We did it!

ROZER: And we still have, let me see, 11 percent of the LOX and methane left.

DANREY: Yes! :moans: Good job, Rozer.

rii4uWO.jpg

ROZER: Let's wait with this until we're docked to “Proteusâ€Â. Cambo, I'll calculate the burn and you'll check it when I'm done.

CAMBO: Copy that.

:Rozer stops and looks at Cambo:

CAMBO: What?

ROZER: Don't you have patient to take care of before I'm done with calculations?

CAMBO: Yes, obviously, right away, I'll just - :gasps: - we're already on the night side?

MeubOeM.jpg

H6jSWsS.jpg

ROZER: We've just passed the terminator.

DANREY: :moans:

ROZER: Don't sit here like an idiot, help him – I'm going to need you in a few minutes, so you better hurry.

CAMBO: Right, of course. I'm on it.

Lvu5jtB.jpg

***

NED: Uh!

JEB: Be careful.

NED: :heavy breathing: You know, there are lots of them here. It would be much easier and quicker if Mal or-

JEB: They can't help you right now. Go on.

NED: Listen Jeb, I don't know what's going on but you have to tell me what is it. Or at least help me with the lights, I can't see crap in this darkness and with only your flashlight-

JEB: Don't come any closer.

:hand in which Jeb holds taser is visibly shaking:

NED: Alright, alright, take it easy old pal. Just take it easy.

JEB: No more talking. :points taser at the containers: Carry on.

2uaM4Jb.jpg

***

CAMBO: …two and a half meter per second.

ROZER: Good.

CAMBO: They are correct then I assume?

ROZER: Precisely. We have slightly more than 5 minutes – I'll try to get a lock on the DSS.

DANREY: You mean “Proteusâ€Â, right?

ROZER: Docking with DSS was preprogrammed, so it's safer to use the existing protocols. Can you move now Danrey?

DANREY: Yes – good old microgravity. Even cripples can dance in space.

CAMBO: Are you sure you are feeling okay? Rozer, I don't think he should be helping you.

ROZER: With all due respect he's a pilot, doctor. He was trained and he's experienced.

DANREY: I'm good, doc. Let me do my job – we've left Duna, I don't need to be strapped to the floor with safety belts.

CAMBO: :sighs: Alright. Here, take my seat.

SY2tdrr.jpg

***

ROZER: …engines cutoff. Fuel?

DANREY: Down to 2 percent. Did we-

ROZER: Yes – circular orbit established at 73 kilometers.

CAMBO: Thank Kod!

ROZER: We're not done yet. Loading inclination change burn protocol.

DANREY: We're not going to detach the first stage?

ROZER: Not yet.

DANREY: But it's dead weight now.

ROZER: Look.

DANREY: What? We have more than 950 units of monopropellant and – oh.

ROZER: And first stage tanks contain more than a half of it. Not so dead weight after all, hmm?

CAMBO: So that's why you said we have plenty of fuel.

ROZER: Yes. Alright, inclination change protocol is loaded – let's see...

48ttSfQ.jpg

CAMBO: And?

DANREY: It seems... that we'll make it!

ROZER: And we'll be left with some extra monopropellant.

CAMBO: So everything is good, right? We won't run out of power?

ROZER: No. We're good – if the main engine works.

cDgdSdY.jpg

***

NED: Uff! There! This was the last one of these damned containers of yours! All of the supplies we've been moving to “Proteus†are again on board DSS. Are you happy now?

JEB: Let's go back to the hatch.

NED: No!

JEB: No?

NED: You are going to explain - don't point that thing at me! - you're going to explain to me what's going on, do you understand? I've no idea what the hell is wrong with you but it ends right now, you hear me?!

JEB: It ends when we're done. Come on.

NED: Frak you. Don't think that you can threaten me with-

JEB: I said come on. Mal and Johndon are waiting for us.

NED: You can shove - they are?

JEB: Yes. Let's go now. You first.

8DxlB7Y.jpg

***

ROZER: …three, two, one, mark.

DANREY: Engines cutoff confirmed,

ROZER: Monopropellant level.

DANREY: Five hundred twenty six, we still have something in the first stage.

ROZER: Good. Inclination is slightly off, plotting correction manoeuver.

ddlhVSG.jpg

CAMBO: So what now, we correct inclination and then detach the first stage, right?

ROZER: Exactly. Correction in five minutes.

zh3Kacn.jpg

7sJF5z8.jpg

***

DANREY: Separation confirmed.

ROZER: Copy that. Let's rotate the spacecraft to see whether we didn't damage the engine nozzle. SAS.

DANREY: Online.

ROZER: There we go.

CAMBO: It looks like we didn't bump into it.

ROZER: Mhm. Power 97 percent. Monopropellant.

DANREY: …

ROZER: Danrey, give me monopropellant level.

DANREY: Hmm? Oh, yes – four hundred thirty six.

CAMBO: What is it?

DANREY: We just dumped our batteries – we're now down to one third of the total capacity.

LcPrqkZ.jpg

ROZER: We dumped more than 6 tones and we had to do this in order to dock. It's not like this stage has much delta-v anyways.

CAMBO: But we'll make it, right?

ROZER: We crunched the numbers. It's orbital mechanics, not rocket science.

CAMBO: Err...

ROZER: It was a joke. Let's prepare for the penultimate burn before – what?

DANREY: You never joke.

ROZER: It did catch your attention – good, I need you focused.

CAMBO: He shouldn't be even sitting here behind the controls under the influence of analgesic.

ROZER: We have to work with what we've got.

DANREY: Yeah. Plus after all it wasn't – that – hard to...

CAMBO: Dan?

DANREY: I – I think... :faints:

CAMBO: Dan!

esu8u8A.jpg

***

NED: Here? In the medbay?

JEB: Yes.

NED: But why are we – oh Kod!

:Mal and Johndon are floating inside the medbay tied up and unconscious:

NED: You! What have you done to them?!

JEB: They are fine.

NED: Liar! What the hell did you-

JEB: Don't. :points taser at Ned: I gave them enough sedative so that they won't wake up in the next few hours.

NED: But why?!

JEB: We're going to the DSS now. Take them.

NED: If you think-

JEB: You either gonna help me or I'll taze you and do this myself.

NED: Then do this! Go on, do this!

JEB: I... I don't want to. I don't want it to end like this before...

NED: Before what?

JEB: …

NED: Before what Jeb?

JEB: Let's go.

NED: Jeb-

JEB: Move. Now.

yzJCOnI.jpg

CAMBO: He's unconscious!

ROZER: What's going on with him?

CAMBO: I don't know, internal bleeding? He's running out of time.

ROZER: Dammit! We – what are you doing? Stop it!

CAMBO: I need to-

ROZER: ECLSS is offline moron – you take his helmet and he will die.

CAMBO: You don't know that for sure and yes, he's going to die if I don't do this! What if he starts choking? In microgravity-

ROZER: What about choking in vacuum? No doctor, don't.

CAMBO: Then you do something! Turn the ECLSS on!

ROZER: We don't have enough power.

CAMBO: Let me help him then.

ROZER: No!

CAMBO: Don't act like you care about him!

ROZER: We all need him and I won't let you make a mistake, you hear me? I'll get us to “Proteus†as soon as I can – until then just keep an eye on him.

CAMBO: The moment he starts choking or convulsing I'm taking this helmet off – and don't try to argue with me, I'm the damned doctor here.

ROZER: Fine. Help me to move him, I need some space if I'm going to execute the burn.

lk2Fb9e.jpg

***

ROZER: Five, four, three, two, one. Engines cutoff. Calculating the trajectory. How's he?

CAMBO: No visible changes but I won't say he's stable. We're running out of time, Rozer.

ROZER: I know. We're on course – closest approach at 300 meters in twenty four minutes.

CAMBO: Twenty four? That's more than half an hour before we transport him into medbay!

ROZER: …

CAMBO: Do something!

ROZER: We're on Hohmann after trajectory correction, it can't be done quicker, not within our delta-v budget.

CAMBO: He may die.

ROZER: We all will if we won't dock to “Proteusâ€Â. It's just the way things work here – you either comply to the laws of physics or you die.

CAMBO: …

ROZER: We're on our way, Cambo. We're on our way.

JEB: Through the hatch. There.

:Ned carries Mal and Johndon inside the DSS:

NED: Here we are. All of us. We good?

JEB: Good.

NED: So now what?

JEB: Now it ends.

NED: Ends?

JEB: These supplies should be more than enough for you to last until the help from Kerbin comes.

NED: What?

JEB: There are more than the three of you are going to need. You have plenty of power and resources.

NED: What are you talking about? I don't follow.

JEB: You'll be alright. You'll be safe.

NED: We? What about you?

JEB: I'm leaving, Ned.

NED: I don't understand.

JEB: I have to.

NED: To do what? To... oh no, you can't Jeb, you just can't-

JEB: Don't move. :points tazer at Ned: Please.

NED: Good Kod Jeb - why? Why are you doing this?

JEB: I'm saving you.

NED: Saving? From what?

JEB: From me. :turns the lever:

:hatch closes separating Ned and Sid:

NED: :subdued: Kod damn you, Jeb! Don't do it!

JEB: I'm sorry.

NED: :subdued: Don't do it, you frakking munatic! Don't kill yourself!

JEB: Kill myself...?

NED: :subdued: Jeb, please don't, for the love of Kod!

JEB: I don't intend to. No. There was too much death.

NED: :subdued: Oh thank Kod! Good Lord, for a moment I thought – where are you going?

JEB: I'm leaving, Ned.

NED: :subdued: What? Where are you going? What the frak are you doing?!

JEB: Goodbye, Ned.

ROZER: “Proteusâ€Â, come in. “Proteusâ€Â, this is DAV with crew of the LAMGML. Where can we dock? Over.

CAMBO: They are not answering.

Who the how the what the frak?!

I can't even right now. What the heck is Jeb playing at? What's going to happen to Rozer? At least the crew will be safe, though.

I'm literally shaking as I type this, I can feel the adrenalin surge. This was an amazing chapter!

Edit: After a reread, it seem like BERTY was talking out loud to Jeb before the EVA. Looks like he's going to die a horrible death now.

Well, I can safely say that that isn't normal. And now I'm sort of on Rozer's side. What are they...

Wait, Mir 2! They... they're going to chase Proteus down! :o

...Right?

I know, I know, spoilers and all and you won't reveal a thing, which is good. Keep it that way :)

Wait... Is Rozer gone? Or is it just me?

Also, if anyone would like to, check out my AAR called "Redder: Mission to Duna". It's written in a style simmilar to The Grand Tour, and obviously inspired by this.

Czok, if it wouldn't have been for you, my writing skills wouldn't be nearly as good as they are, and I wouldn't have something to look forward to when coming home from school. Thank you for everything!

Two of them safe on the station, Rozer (if his RCS can get him back to the station!) should be safe, the real question is Jeb on the Proteus... if he still is on the Proteus. It looks like he is, but who knows? Is he alive? Is Berty fully insane? Is he even self aware any more with all the data errors?

All these questions and more will (probably) be answered on the next episode of SOAP... no, I mean the Grand Tour! :D

My subconscious: I can't allow you to continue endangering my brain.

:brain begins short-circuiting:

My subconscious: Your reckless behavior is the cause of this.

I enjoyed working with you, Capitan Czokletmuss. Goodbye.

:falls on floor and begins twitching violently:

...

What a chapter.

I don't know how, but somehow this has turned less into a grand tour and more into a fight for survival. I remember the days when everyone was optimistic, you know... The grand tour! Every planet and back! When they were still alive! But now more than 50% of the crew is gone, Proteus is standing on its last legs, their pilot's got warrior's guilt, turned into a maniac, and now the AI just came back online and, as far as he's concerned, could potentially kill all of them before (if) they reach Kerbin. And Eeloo, by the looks of things...

Uhm guys, I don't think Rozer died yet, he still has his spacesuit and his RCS pack (he is clearly using it in the pictures, so it is operational).

Anyway, Czo, you are either crazy or a genius, but either way, this is so awesome i'm struggling to find words for it right now.

PS:

Also, BERTY is back, YAY! (Told ya!) :D
